Roberto Firmino a ‘problem’ at Liverpool and has been for a ‘long time’

Liverpool icon John Aldridge believes Roberto Firmino has become "a problem" in the team, and has completely lost his "mojo".

Jurgen Klopp has seen his side surrender their Premier League title in disappointing style this season.

The Reds squad has been ravaged by injuries, and it now seems they will miss out on European football entirely.

Liverpool haven't been able to count on their front three of Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah this season, and have been blunt going forward as a result.

Salah has 20 goals to show from his 32 Premier League appearances this season, but Mane and Firmino have just 14 combined from 30 and 31 appearances respectively.

And Aldridge explained that the Brazilian's lack of firepower through the middle has created a serious problem for Klopp.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, he declared that Firmino has clearly lost all his confidence and self-belief, and needs to rediscover it in order to get out of his slump.

"From my point of view as a former striker, there is no real belief in the forwards and it is horrible to see," Aldridge said.

"Look at Firmino, he is a problem.

"Jurgen believes in him, of course, and he is continuing to play to get himself out of the slump but it looks more and more unlikely the longer it goes on.

"His demeanour is different and he drops into midfield to do a job there at times, but when you have a number nine on your back, your job is to score goals.

"He’s lost his belief, totally, his confidence, everything in his game seems to have gone and he just can’t shake himself out of it.

"Maybe he needs a break? Maybe next season the return of the fans will help him out of it?"

Liverpool are expected to look for a new striker during the summer transfer window, with a move for Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins tentatively suggested last week.
