Romelu Lukaku is reportedly open to a Chelsea return as the Blues continue to scour the market for a top-class striker to boost their Premier League title chances next season. Their pursuit of Erling Haaland has been well-publicised, but their efforts so far have done little to catch Dortmund’s attention.

Lukaku was signed by Chelsea as a fresh-faced 18-year-old from Anderlecht. More than a decade on and he is one of the hottest strikers in Europe.

The Belgian went on two different loan spells while at Stamford Bridge, both successful in their own right, to West Brom and Everton.

In the end, the Toffees decided to make the move permanent in 2014 for £28million, leaving Lukaku with 15 goalless appearances at Chelsea on his resume.

According to The Athletic, the 28-year-old feels as though he has unfinished business at Stamford Bridge.

A similar situation emerged with Paul Pogba and Manchester United, where the club let him leave as a youngster without being given a proper chance to prove his worth.

Several years later, they bought him back for big money. It looks as though Chelsea are attempting to do the same.

A further boost to the prospective deal is that the club and Lukaku’s agent, Federico Pastorello, enjoy a healthy working relationship.

After his spell with Everton, the powerful frontman went through an up-and-down time at Man Utd before linking up with Antonio Conte at Inter Milan.

Quite simply, Lukaku hit top form at the San Siro, bagging over 30 goals in all competitions across both of his two seasons so far.

Last campaign, he was only behind Cristiano Ronaldo in the domestic scoring charts as he fired Inter to their first Serie A title since 2010.

Lukaku’s receptivity to a move back to west London will come as music to the ears of Thomas Tuchel and transfer chief Marina Granovskaia.

The pair have been in the market for a top-drawer striker all summer, with their headline-grabbing pursuit of Erling Haaland still failing to bear fruit.

With Tammy Abraham reportedly being tabled as part of the swap proposal involving Haaland, and Olivier Giroud already bedding in at AC Milan, Chelsea’s striker hunt just reached a new level of urgency.

If Haaland cannot be lured in by the Chelsea hierarchy, they could certainly do a whole lot worse than to bring in one of the most dominant attackers in Europe, who is likely to carry an extra edge due to his past at the Bridge.
