Chelsea are set to miss out on Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez after failing to convince him of a move, according to reports. Saul has been linked to a Premier League switch ahead of Tuesday’s summer transfer deadline but could remain at Atletico for the season ahead.

Earlier this week, reports suggested the La Liga champions had offered Chelsea the chance to sign Saul.

The deal involved would’ve been a season-long loan with the option to buy for around £40million next summer.

The 26-year-old has fallen out of favour under Diego Simeone, who preferred Marcos Llorente last season.

Atletico also signed Rodrigo De Paul from Udinese this summer, leaving Saul further down the pecking order.

He’s unlikely to escape the club as far as the latest reports from Spain are concerned, though.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Saul will play for Atletico this season after unsuccessful talks with Chelsea.

Despite his current status at the Wanda Metropolitano, the European champions’ proposal failed to win Saul over.

The outlet has subsequently ruled out his departure unless an unexpected last-minute offer for his services arrives.

Thomas Tuchel will still be confident of strengthening his squad further before Tuesday’s summer transfer deadline.

Chelsea smashed their club transfer record earlier this month, welcoming Romelu Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge in a £97.5m deal.

The Blues are being heavily linked with a move for Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde, who has been left out of the La Liga side’s squad this weekend.

If Tuchel can bolster both ends of his team with genuinely top-class players, there won’t be much room for complaints if the Saul transfer doesn’t come to fruition.

Chelsea’s midfield options are as strong as they come in the Premier League as it is, so Saul’s arrival would just be a big bonus.

Jorginho and N’Golo Kante have thrived under Tuchel and played a significant role in the club’s second Champions League win last season.

The German boss also has Mateo Kovacic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek to choose from in a highly competitive area of his squad.

Saul’s Atletico exit may not be entirely off the table yet, with Manchester United also linked with a late-window move for his signature.

But following the Red Devils’ capture of Cristiano Ronaldo, that possibility may now be void unless the club offloads players.
