Sir Alex Ferguson’s cunning plan which stopped Man Utd from sacking him

Sir Alex Ferguson insists building a successful youth system to support the first team was the secret behind his longevity as Manchester United manager.

Ferguson spent a staggering 26 years in charge of United and achieved record-breaking success during that lengthy stint at the helm.

The Scot picked up 13 Premier League titles in that time, as well as five FA Cups, four League Cups and two Champions Leagues.

It is unlikely we will ever see another manager enjoy such a long period in charge of one club, with modern-day coaches afforded far less time in the hot-seat than ever before.

But Ferguson has given away his secret to remaining in the United job for so long – ensuring he always had access to a promising batch of academy players.

He said on Charlie Rose back in 2013: “You start [at a club] with what you believe in. I believe in the football club rather than the football team.

“I can understand coaches who concentrate on the football team because it gives them their job. You know it's a result industry.

“You look at Paulo Di Canio last week, five games into his first season at Sunderland, they allow him to spend £19million and then sack him. To me, there's no evidence that’s gonna bring success. There is no evidence.

“So we worked really hard with the youth system, making sure we had a solid foundation that would hold its fore for years and years.

“So when you see a Manchester United team and you got to the position where I could plan ahead, I could see three years ahead where this team is going, knowing that I had certain players coming through the youth system that would support the team all the time.”
