Solskjaer has found his own version of Ferguson’s ‘first name on the teamsheet’

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskajer has finally found his most undroppable player in the same vein as Denis Irwin was to Sir Alex Ferguson.

United's season so far has been largely defined by Bruno Fernandes' goals, considering he's played 36 games already this season and scored 21 goals.

But looking further down the team sheet, there's another figure who has been undroppable for Solskjaer.

Left-back Luke Shaw has looked like a man transformed this season after the arrival of Alex Telles.

While some defenders would have gone into their shell after a new big-money signing in their position, but Shaw has been playing some of the best football of his career.

The defender has played 28 times across all competitions and has been Solskjaer's Mr Reliable.

Ferguson once claimed that despite having managed the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Eric Cantona and others throughout his career, Denis Irwin was best signing.

The left-back cost United just £625,000, and went on to play more than 500 times for the Red Devils.

Ferguson once claimed he would be the only man guaranteed a place in his all-time United XI, such was his importance to the side.

"Honestly, I would say Denis Irwin would be the one certainty to get in the team. I called him an eight out of 10," he said.

"At Highbury in one game, he had a bad pass back in the last minute and [Dennis] Bergkamp came in and scored. After the game the press said: 'You must be disappointed in that pass back.' I said: 'Well, one mistake in 10 years isn't bad.' He was an unbelievable player."

Shaw is now proving the same kind of value to Solskjaer having overcome his injury woes.

The defender has cemented his place in the side ahead of Telles, and has been relied upon in a number of big games this season.

Shaw came on against Wolves at half-time when United were chasing the game, one they went on to win 1-0 in the last minute.

He was also called upon against West Ham in the FA Cup, coming on for Telles in injury time before United found a late winner to progress to the next round.

Solskjaer said of Shaw in January: ‘Luke has immense quality. He has a very good technique, good quality.

"You see against Liverpool, he takes the ball and drives forward, that is something that I have pushed him more to do because we know he can do it.

"When you have the talent of Luke, when that fitness and the mental bit is sorted then you are always going to get good performances."
