Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Manchester United will not ‘sit back’ this summer and has pledged to make significant investment in the transfer market, while he also hopes to tie Paul Pogba down to a new contract.
The Red Devils finished as runners-up in the Premier League but were 12 points adrift of winners Manchester City and never really mounted a genuine challenge, while they failed to collect any silverware yet again.
Solskjaer is keen to strengthen his squad and close the gap, and United have been linked with moves for Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho, Spurs forward Harry Kane, Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres and Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier.
And now the Norwegian has confirmed United’s intention to make big moves this summer and believes the club cannot rest on their laurels despite a promising campaign.
‘We were the second-best team, but too far behind to threaten the champions,’ Solskjaer told TV2. ‘We have to strengthen ourselves.
‘Of course, something will happen in the transfer window.
‘The world has become very different than it was 15 or 16 months ago, but we have to make some moves in the transfer window and also with the team.’
He continued: ‘It is never possible to sit back. You are constantly looking for reinforcements.
‘Football is dynamic, so unexpected things can happen like injuries, illness, or someone that wants to move.
‘You have to take everything possible into consideration and reflect.
‘I will never sit down and think “the team is now exactly the way I want it to be” because you always see some other players, or other teams doing something you want.’
Pogba, meanwhile, only has one year left on his contract with United and there are suggestions he could be sold if he refuses to sign a new deal, with the club unwilling to let him leave on a free in 2022, but Solskjaer is adamant he wants the Frenchman to stay.
Asked about Pogba’s future, Solskjaer replied: ‘We want the best players here and the club knows what I want.
‘I don’t know how the talks are going, but if we are going to fight for the best trophies then we need to have the best players.’
