Steven Gerrard became an instant meme after channeling his inner Ralph Hasenhuttl against Manchester City, joked Jamie Carragher.

It came immediately after Leon Bailey's equaliser at Villa Park in a brilliant 1-1 draw for Aston Villa. After Erling Haaland's back-to-back hat-tricks in the Premier League, Gerrard's men appeared to be the next lambs for slaughter.

But while the Norwegian sensation did get on the scoresheet, City's attacking prowess was successfully tamed to prevent a goal-fest on Saturday evening.

And Villa needed just one shot on target to make an impact after some fine work from Jacob Ramsey saw Bailey fire past Ederson, leaving the Brazilian with no chance. It saw Villa Park erupt with celebration – including in the dugout.

Well, momentarily at least, as Gerrard's emotions got the best of him before he turned back to his bench to calm himself down – as well as his staff. It evoked memories of Southampton manager Hasenhuttl, whose similar reaction went viral.

Even Carragher said in co-commentary: "Stevie has just become an instant meme."

But while the Liverpool legend can go home happy with a point, Gerrard admitted he was mystified by the decision to rule Philippe Coutinho's goal out as offside. The Brazilian had pinged one in sublimely but the whistle had already gone – despite the playmaker actually being onside.

He said: "I saw a legitimate goal but obviously I am biased. The referee did the same at the other end with [Ezri] Konsa on the keeper, he was desperate on the whistle which went against us twice in the game."
