‘I’m not surprised by anyone anymore’: Toni Kroos dismisses Mesut Ozil’s defence of Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang’s goal celebration after Real Madrid star called his mask theatrics ‘nonsense’
- Toni Kroos is hoping he has heard the last of the mask celebration debate

- Mesut Ozil defended his team-mate, but Kroos is unimpressed with them
Toni Kroos is looking to put his social media spat with Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang behind him, after the Real Madrid star has spent the past few days the butt of a few jokes on Twitter.
Earlier this week, Kroos branded Aubameyang’s occasional mask-based goal celebrations as ‘nonsense,’ prompting Ozil to jump to his Arsenal team-mate’s defence.
‘I’m not surprised by anyone anymore,’ Kroos told Bild, after both players had posted joking responses to him on social media. ‘I found it amusing, but I’ve already ticked it off.’

Aubameyang has been known to produce a mask of a Marvel superhero when he scores, having donned the likes of Deadpool, Spider-Man, and Black Panther in the past.
‘I find it [elaborate celebrations] very silly. Even worse is if there are any objects hidden in their socks,’ Kroos told the Einfach mal Luppen podcast. ‘Aubameyang once celebrated and took out a mask. That’s where it ends with me.
‘I don’t think that’s a good role model, either. What nonsense.’
He also had a problem with Antoine Griezmann performing dances from the video game Fortnite when celebrating.

Kroos is unimpressed with the two of them, but is hoping to draw a line under the debate
‘I needed a mask which represents me and that’s the Black Panther,’ Aubameyang explained after the game in question in 2019. ‘In Gabon, we call the national team the Panthers.’
He also says he performs these kinds of celebrations for his son, and jokingly asked on Twitter this week: ‘Does Toni Kroos have kids? Just to remember I did it for my son a few times and I will do it again, I wish you have kids one day and make them happy like this.’
Kroos does have children, and Aubameyang took to Twitter again later in the week to post a picture of himself along with Kroos’ Germany international team-mate Marco Reus wearing superhero masks during a game, with the caption: ‘Send @ToniKroos congratulations for his three kids, cordially your Batman and Robin.’

Ozil also weighed in on the debate, posting a gif of the Black Panther celebration, labelling it as ‘the best’ in the caption.
Kroos is clearly unimpressed with the two of them, and is hoping to put an end to the whole saga with his latest comment.
Kroos won’t be playing with Ozil anymore in the national team after the latter’s retirement, but they did have some good times together, winning the World Cup in 2014.
Ozil is also unlikely to be playing alongside Aubameyang anytime soon either, after being left out of Arsenal’s Premier League and Europa League squads.
