Tottenham boss Antonio Conte has delivered an update on the club’s transfer plans that make for grim reading for his side’s supporters. Conte replaced Nuno Espirito Santo in the Spurs dugout a month ago, with high hopes that the Italian could turn around the dreadful form that has plagued them since Mauricio Pochettino’s departure.

So far though, those plans are falling flat, with Spurs at serious risk of being knocked out of the Europa Conference League in the group stages.

An embarrassing defeat to NS Mura last week was the lowest point of Conte’s reign so far, with the Italian blasting his side following the loss.

Heavy snow at Turf Moor prevented Conte’s men from making a quick recovery from the humiliation in a trip to Burnley on Sunday, with the Premier League clash postponed.

Though he has only been in charge for four games, with two of those coming in the Conference League, Tottenham’s weaknesses have already been made clear for Conte.

On the face of it, the January transfer window would offer the perfect opportunity for the Spurs boss to improve the quality of his squad.

He had a successful working relationship with current managing director of football Fabio Paratici at Juventus.

The duo would be expected to at least partly recreate that success at Tottenham, but Conte appears to have played down the chances of significant arrivals in the winter window.

Speaking ahead of his side’s Premier League clash with Brentford, Conte insisted that transfer plans have not yet been discussed.

“Honestly when I decided to become Tottenham manager I didn’t speak about this aspect. When you take a job, you have to make your evaluations and you have to feel your sensations,” he said.

“And honestly, I felt Tottenham was the right club to work and to bring my ideas and philosophy of football. For this reason, I accepted the job.

“I didn’t talk about January or the way to improve the team. I repeat: I’m here because I have great enthusiasm, great patience to start a new work with Tottenham.

“If I’m here it’s because I want to build something important with the club.”

Despite that grim news, Conte has pleaded for time from Spurs fans, insisting that with patience he can turn things around.

“I know at the moment we’re a bit far from the top clubs but we need to work to improve the situation,” Conte added.

“To start to and also to create a good basis where you start – and then you build. We can do this and then our fans will support us.

“For sure, at the moment, it’s not simple, but I have great enthusiasm and great patience and I believe that here we can win something importance.

“We need patience and time but I have great desire to do something great.”
