Tottenham are one of the clubs who have been contacted by Barcelona to gauge interest over the signing of Antoine Griezmann this summer. Barca are desperately trying to offload some of their highest earners amid a financial crisis and Griezmann is currently top of the club’s agenda.

The Spanish giants find themselves in a serious mess this summer and need to sell some of their current players just to continue operating.

On the one hand, Barcelona have announced the signings of Memphis Depay, Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia, brought Emerson Royal back to the club from a loan spell and agreed a new contract with Lionel Messi.

On the other hand, none of those players are officially Barcelona players because they cannot register them due to their financial predicament.

That is because Barca have a whopping £1,003million (€1,173m) of debt hanging over their head and owe £276m (€323m) in transfer fees and player amortization.

They need to get around £171m (€200m) off their wage bill this summer just to meet La Liga’s strict salary cap for the 2021/22 season.

That is where the likes of Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele and Philippe Coutinho come in; Barcelona would like to sell them, but are struggling to find buyers.

L’Equipe reports that Barcelona have reached out to Spurs and Manchester City to offer Griezmann after making similar approaches to Atletico Madrid and Juventus.

Swap deals for Atletico’s Saul Niguez and Juve’s Paulo Dybala have been mooted recently, but have made no progress – in part due to Griezmann’s wages.

It is only two years since Barca saw fit to trigger Griezmann’s £107m (€120m) release clause at Atletico and hand him a five-year contract worth around £300,000 per week.

The 30-year-old forward has not been a flop of Coutinho or Dembele proportions – he scored 20 goals last season after all – but he is an expense Barcelona can no longer afford.

While Tottenham are in the middle of rebuilding their squad under Nuno Espirito Santo and Fabio Paratici, a move for Griezmann appears unlikely, especially if Harry Kane stays put.

The Frenchman’s wage demands are a huge barrier, although Spurs have proven not an insurmountable one, given Gareth Bale’s loan spell from Real Madrid last season.

However, the main problem would appear to be Griezmann’s wishes: he would reportedly only leave Barcelona willingly for former club Atleti.

As a member of his entourage told L’Équipe: “Antoine is not ready to accept any conditions to leave, simply because Barcelona find themselves in a complicated situation [financially].”

At the moment, then, Griezmann to Tottenham would appear to be a non-starter.
