Things are beginning to heat up in the January transfer market as Premier League sides start to make their moves ahead of the second half of the season. On Tuesday Aston Villa completed their sensational loan move for Barcelona star Phillipe Coutinho, with the playmaker linking up with ex-Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard once more.
And Wednesday is expected to be another busy day, with Newcastle closing in on the signing of striker Chris Wood from Burnley.
Arsenal and Tottenham, meanwhile, are continuing to battle for Fiorentina frontman Dusan Vlahovic, and the Serb certainly appears to be one of the most in-demand stars in Europe at the moment.
Everton are certainly in need of reinforcements, and could well complete a deal for Aston Villa’s Anwar El Ghazi, having already bought Vitalii Mykolenko and Nathan Patterson.
So the only question remains: what does today hold in store for us?
Express Sport will keep you up to date on all the latest goings on in the January transfer window with regular updates below.
Man Utd join Lamptey race
Manchester United have supposedly expressed an interest in signing Tariq Lamptey from Brighton – but are ‘£10million short’ in their valuation.
Ralf Rangnick is taking charge of his first – and potentially last – transfer window as United boss this month with a replacement expected to take over in the summer.
A new right-back may be signed before the end of January, according to the Daily Mail, and Lamptey appears to be the top target.
But United will face competition, with Arsenal and Tottenham also thought to be interested.
Barca may use Depay in swap
Barcelona could use Memphis Depay as a makeweight in a potential deal for Juventus striker Alvaro Morata, according to reports.
The Spanish giants recently acquired Ferran Torres from Manchester City but hope to add further firepower to their ranks this month.
According to SPORT, Barca could look to capitalise on the Juve’s need for a new attacker by including Depay in a potential deal for Morata.
Everton ‘in contact’ with Golovin
Everton have reportedly registered their interest in Monaco star Aleksandr Golovin with Rafael Benitez keen to build on the two signings he’s already made this month.
The Toffees have acted quickly in the January transfer window to sign Nathan Patterson and Vitalii Mykolenko.
And according to Sport Witness, Everton have already made contact with Golovin’s agent on a potential move.
The 25-year-old has proven his versatility in Ligue 1 to play in a number of positions across the front line.
Shearer’s Wood view
Newcastle legend Alan Shearer’s former comments on Burnley striker Chris Wood have resurfaced after it emerged that the Magpies had triggered a £20million release clause for the New Zealand international on Tuesday evening.
Magpies hero Shearer gave Wood a glowing recommendation last year, with his comments sure to delight Newacastle fans as the player’s move to St James’ Park becomes all but a formality.
“I like him, I like what he does for the team and he is the focal point for them. He is very good at occupying two centre halves,” said Shearer.
“He is a get out for Burnley if they want because they are not afraid to knock it long.
“He can keep hold of it and bring other players into the game.”
Villa close in on Digne
Lucas Digne is reportedly set to follow Philippe Coutinho through the doors at Villa Park over the coming days, after a fee of around £25million was agreed with Everton for the left-back’s services.
A tweet by Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett told that after days of negotiations, and having beaten off interest from Chelsea, West Ham and Newcastle, the Villans have finally agreed a deal for their man worth up to £25m.
Digne is due in Birmingham for a medical later on Tuesday, signalling a superb start to the window for Gerrard after he brought in his former team-mate Coutinho in an astonishing loan deal from Barcelona.
Prem clubs battle for Brazilian wonderkid
Manchester United have joined Liverpool and Manchester City in the pursuit of Brazilian wonderkid Endrick, who has attracted heavy interest following his breakthrough into the Palmeiras team as a 15-year-old.
Endrick has been firing in the goals for the Brazilian side, and his recent solo goal against Real Ariquemes has attracted a lot of attention for the starlet.
Flamengo are also in the mix for the youngster should he wish to move but stay in his homeland for the time being, but it is thought that Palmerias are desperate to hold on to Endrick before looking to cash in on their newest talent.
Arteta’s transfer admission
“I can say that situation hasn’t changed. Every time I have spoken to any player, they were so willing to come. I haven’t faced any other situation.”
Wood’s Newcastle move mocked
Newcastle have been questioned by Gabriel Agbonlahor over the impending signing of Chris Wood from Burnley.
Wood is reportedly set to have a medical at Newcastle ahead of a £25million move. The Magpies activated the release clause in the New Zealand star’s contract.
Agbonlahor says Wood probably thought his agent was joking when he informed him of Newcastle’s interest due to his poor return so far this season.
He said: “He’s got three Premier League goals this season, 30 years old, a club who has £300billion worth from their owners. I think it’s a strange, strange signing.”
Rashford’s Man Utd talks
Manchester United star Marcus Rashford reportedly told club bosses he was committed to the club despite his off-field actions and alarming dip in form.
The England international has scored just three goals this season.
And his poor performance against Aston Villa on Monday means he’s now gone 11 matches without finding the net.
According to the Daily Star, he’s now held crunch talks with club bosses.
During those talks, Rashford apparently made it clear he was fully committed to the club at the current moment in time.
Vlahovic ‘open’ to Arsenal
Arsenal transfer target Dusan Vlahovic would be ‘open’ to joining the club this month, according to reports.
The Gunners have been linked with a move for Vlahovic in recent weeks and have stepped up their interest in the January transfer window.
Vlahovic has previously stated he would like to stay at Fiorentina until the end of the season.
However, Arsenal have seemingly convinced the player that they would be a good destination for him this month.
Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol says Vlahovic “would like to play for Arsenal” and can see what manager Mikel Arteta is building at the Emirates.
