Clubs in the Premier League and around Europe are working hard to bolster their squads this month, with plenty of deals already wrapped up. There have been several blockbuster transfers linked in January too but clubs only have a little over two weeks now to conclude their business.
This window has already seen stars like Philippe Coutinho and Ferran Torres switch clubs, but more big-name players could be on the move.
A story that has dominated much of this window is Arsenal’s search for a new striker.
Mikel Arteta is set to be backed in the market once again should a deal for one of their targets become possible.
As things stand, the Gunners have three main targets in Alexander Isak, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dusan Vlahovic, though the latter is understood to be their preference.
Vlahovic is keen on a move away from Fiorentina but a deal to join Arsenal has been complicated, with the striker said to be unconvinced by the project at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal suffer two setbacks in Dusan Vlahovic pursuit as Erling Haaland problem emerges
Arsenal are, nonetheless, pushing ahead in talks and trying to get a deal done despite already incurring setbacks.
Newcastle, meanwhile, are also busy trying to wrap up the signing of a striker. A deal in the region of £20m for Burnley’s Chris Wood looks to be nailed on, with talks at an advanced stage.
Wood would become Newcastle’s second signing of the window, following Kieran Trippier through the door.
The Magpies are not expected to stop there though, with the club’s new Saudi owners giving Eddie Howe a blank cheque to do exactly what he wants this month to help them in their relegation fight.
A number of players have been linked with a move to St James’ Park, including Manchester United target Amadou Haidara.

Arsenal ‘meet reps of Youri Tielemans at London Colney’ in discreet transfer meeting
Newcastle have been knocked back in their attempts to strike a deal for the RB Leipzig midfielder so far but are now readying a fourth bid worth £80million.
United are desperate to sign a midfielder, though are likely to wait until the summer.
Haidara is not the only man on United’s shortlist, with the club also considering a move for West Ham’s Declan Rice.
However, the Red Devils are said to be ‘behind’ Chelsea and Liverpool in the £200m race for the England ace.
There are also plenty of other big transfer stories developing at the moment and Express Sport are on hand to keep you updated on all of the gossip and news coming in, so make sure you stick right here.
Liverpool’s ‘bargaining chip’
Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool’s owners are banking on teams not showing much interest in signing Mohamed Salah this summer during contract negotiations.
Carragher said: “Salah wants to be paid as well as any top player in the Premier League or world football and why shouldn’t he?
“The problem where Liverpool are probably looking at it is, where does Salah go?
“The Spanish giants are really out of the equation in terms of the problems they have financially. Would he leave and ruin his legacy by going to Manchester City or Manchester United? Probably not.
“That may be Liverpool’s bargaining chip, but, for me, I would want this done as quickly as possible.”
Diego Carlos wants Newcastle move
Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol claims Diego Carlos ‘wants’ to move to Newcastle amid increased interest from the Magpies.
Newcastle have earmarked Carlos as a top target for the January transfer window and they may end up getting their man.
“He is a top, top quality centre-back. He’s been very impressive at Sevilla and people were talking about would he want to go from Sevilla to a club that are in the relegation zone in the Premier League,” he said on Sky Sports.
“But I think the player himself is open to coming to Newcastle. I think he would definitely want to move and it looks like some progress is being made.”
Arsenal terminate Azeez loan
Arsenal may be looking to solve their midfield crisis by bringing Miguel Azeez back to the club.
Football London claim that Arsenal have terminated Azeez’s loan with Portsmouth.
Mikel Arteta is short of options in midfield and Xhaka’s red card against Liverpool only made matters worse.
Azeez struggled for regular minutes at Portsmouth since joining on loan, starting just four league matches.
Newcastle abandon double transfer swoop
Newcastle have reportedly abandoned plans to sign Benoit Badiashile and Hugo Ekitike despite holding an interest in the pair.
The Magpies have already signed Chris Wood and Kieran Trippier this month with plans to bolster their defensive ranks.
Diego Carlos appears to be the preferred target now with Sky Sports claiming a bid has already been made.

Arsenal eyeing up Brazilian youngster to bolster midfield
Arsenal are supposedly keen to bring in a striker this month, but a midfielder is also likely with Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny at the Africa Cup of Nations.
20-year-old midfielder Danilo is on their radar, according Brazilian outlet Lance, and the Gunners are reportedly preparing a bid in the region of £21million.
They may have some job prising him away from Palmeiras this month, however, with the side keen to keep hold of the midfielder who has become a mainstay in their team.
Dusan Vlahovic to make decision on future ‘immediately’ says Fiorentina CEO
Dusan Vlahovic got himself amongst the goals once again on Thursday evening, grabbing Fiorentina’s first in a tough away tie against Napoli.
The 21-year-old showed solid movement in the box and a turn of speed to manufacture space before lashing across the goalkeeper with his left foot.
Arsenal are said to be interested in the prolific marksman, whose price is reportedly set at around £58million, and Fiorentina’s CEO has demanded clarity on the striker’s future.
“We expect Dušan to make a decision on his future immediately, we need an answer if he stays or wants to leave,” said Barone.
“We asked Dušan two days ago to decide and communicate his plan in public immediately.”
DONE DEAL! Anwar El Ghazi joins Everton on loan from Aston Villa
Everton have completed the signing of Aston Villa winger Anwar El Ghazi on loan until the end of the season with an £8million option to buy.
The trigger-happy attacker had fallen out of favour under Steven Gerrard, with the likes of Leon Bailey, Bertrand Traore and Ollie Watkins’ switch to the wing making regular minutes hard to come by.
The 26-year-old becomes the Toffees’ third signing of the January window, and manager Rafa Benitez will be counting on him to turn his side’s fortunes around.
Newcastle given rogue option amid centre-back hunt
Newcastle seem to be pulling out all the stops in an attempt to reinforce their backline this January, and although Kieran Trippier has already made his Magpies debut, there is plenty more work to be done.
Sven Botman and Diego Carlos have both been the subject of bids from the cash-rich Tynesiders, although Lille and Sevilla respectively have both slapped down their offers.
Express Sport‘s Ryan Taylor has tipped Eddie Howe and co. to put together a deal for Chelsea centre-back Malang Sarr.
The 22-year-old put on a dynamic display against Tottenham on Wednesday evening, and given that he is no more than a bit-part player under Thomas Tuchel, the Blues could be receptive to an approach.
Man Utd in ‘pole position’ to sign Declan Rice alternative
Manchester United are reportedly in pole position to sign Napoli midfielder Fabian Ruiz.
Interim boss Ralf Rangnick is seemingly keen to bolster his options in the middle of the park, particularly with Paul Pogba into the final six months of his contract, although he may have to wait until the summer to sign Ruiz.
At least according to Repubblica, who point out that the 25-year-old will then enter the final year of his deal in Naples.
United seem to be eternally linked with West Ham star Declan Rice, although the Hammers are likely to demand a hefty sum for the England regular.
With five goals and two assists to his name, Ruiz has been a mainstay in Luciano Spalletti’s midfield this campaign.
Derby and Dortmund battle for Amad
Derby and Dortmund will face off in a David-vs-Goliath battle for Manchester United winger Amad Diallo, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Arsenal are also in pursuit of the midfielder, who may be available for just £6millon.
Bissouma to ‘stay’ at Brighton
Brighton head coach Graham Potter has said today that he “expects” Yves Bissouma to stay at the club this window.

Tottenham ‘pull out of Lamptey race’
Tottenham will reportedly not make a move for Tariq Lamptey this month.
Antonio Conte’s men were understood to be lining up an offer for the £50m Brighton star, but have now shelved their interest in him, according to Sky Sports.
Manchester United and Arsenal have also been linked to the right-back in the past few weeks and may now have a clear run at the player.
Fabianski set for new West Ham deal
West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski will not be leaving the club at the end of the season, according to The Sun.
The Poland international, 36, is out of contract at the end of the season but is set to sign a new one-year extension.
Newcastle ‘offered Man Utd flop Donny van de Beek
Donny van de Beek has been offered to Newcastle and Borussia Dortmund, according to Manchester Evening News.
The Dutchman is desperate to end his Manchester United nightmare and now could finally end his miserable spell at Old Trafford.
United’s three options to replace Ronaldo
Manchester United could turn to three potential replacements if Cristiano Ronaldo follows up on his reported message to agent Jorge Mendes surrounding his future.
The Portuguese is believed to be struggling with Ralf Rangnick’s style of play and could be set to find a new club if United’s instability continues until the end of the campaign.
Amid the growing threat of their star name and top scorer leaving, Express Sport looks at three names who could come into view should Ronaldo leave.

Dybala puts Europe’s giants on alert
Paulo Dybala could be on the move this summer after transfer reporter César Luis Merlo claimed he does not want to renew his contract with Juventus.
The forward’s deal expires this summer, meaning he could become a free agent.
A number of Premier League clubs and others around Europe would likely be interested in taking Dybala if the Argentine star became available.
Dybala almost moved to Tottenham in 2019 but it is not yet clear if the club will renew their interest in the player after this latest development.
Tottenham working on Ndombele exit
Tottenham chief Fabio Paratici is attempting to sell Tanguy Ndombele in this window.
The Frenchman was dropped by Antonio Conte for last night’s Carabao Cup semi-final loss to Chelsea and appears to have played his last game for the club.
Tottenham only signed Ndomeble for a club-record £53.8m in 2019 and face a tough task recouping their money for the midfielder, whose stock has dramatically fallen over the last few years.
Conte is desperate to bring in new players and will hope Paratici can offload Ndombele this month to raise funds to aid his transfer plans.
AC Milan weigh-up Bailly swoop
Manchester United defender Eric Bailly has been offered an escape route from Old Trafford, with AC Milan ready to make a swoop.
The Times claim the Serie A giants would be keen to take Bailly on loan.
The United defender has been used sparingly this season, making just 7 appearances so far.
Arsenal ‘enter fray’ for £6m transfer bargain
Arsenal have entered the running for a £6m transfer bargain this month.
The Gunners are looking to strengthen in January and are now set to rival Premier League clubs for a Bundesliga midfielder who is available on the cheap.
Juve consider Loftus-Cheek move
Juventus would consider signing Ruben Loftus-Cheek this month if Arthur Melo left, according to Sky Italy.
The Brazilian is being linked with a loan move to Arsenal while Juve are also set to lose Aaron Ramsey.
Loftus-Cheek, who was previously wanted by Jose Mourinho at Roma, has rarely featured this season and would likely be keen on leaving this window for more game time elsewhere.
Pogba’s stance on PSG move
Paul Pogba has been linked with a move to PSG amid his contract stand-off with Manchester United.
The Frenchman is now able to speak to foreign clubs in order to negotiate a pre-contract agreement ahead of next season, though United are hopeful they can still convince him to stay.
If Pogba was to join PSG, it would see him link up with stars like Lionel Messi and Neymar.
The midfielder has remained coy on his future in recent months while he focuses on returning to full fitness, but not his ‘stance’ on leaving United for PSG has come to light.

Newcastle eye Smalling
Newcastle have expressed an interest in former Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, according to Tuttomercatoweb.
Eddie Howe is desperate to sign a new centre-back and has seen a number of deals for several targets fail.
Now, Newcastle have turned their attentions to Smalling, who is currently playing for Jose Mourinho’s Roma.
However, reports in Italy claim Newcastle will face a tough battle to convince the player to join from Roma this month.
Newcastle ready £80m bid
Newcastle have now signed Chris Wood and Kieran Trippier this month, but their spending is far from over.
The Magpies are expected to shell out a lot more to aid their survival bid.

Arsenal suffer Vlahovic setback
Arsenal have suffered two major setbacks in their pursuit of Dusan Vlahovic, with the chase for Erling Haaland set to impact the Gunners.
Mikel Arteta is keen to sign a new striker, with Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah out of contract at the end of the season, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang remains frozen out.
Talks have been ongoing all month, with Arsenal ready to pay his £68m asking price, but a deal does not look like it’s going to be straightforward.
DONE DEAL: Digne signs for Aston Villa
Another one is over the line, with Lucas Digne completing his move to Aston Villa for £25million.
DONE DEAL: Newcastle sign Wood
Newcastle have bolstered their attacking options with the signing of Chris Wood.
The Burnley star joins for a fee in the region of £20million.
After completing his move, Wood said:
“This is a very exciting opportunity for me and I’m delighted to be a Newcastle United player.
“I have played at St. James’ Park a few times and it’s an amazing place, so to have the chance to represent this club with those incredible supporters behind me and my team-mates is very special.
“The club and manager have been first class during this process, and I really can’t wait to get onto the pitch and repay the faith they have in me, especially with a vital part of the season ahead of us.”
United ‘behind’ in race for Rice
Manchester United have been warned that Declan Rice would likely consider a move to Liverpool or Chelsea over a switch to Old Trafford this summer.
