England legends Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard are set to be interviewed for the vacant managerial position at Everton.

The Toffees are looking for their second permanent manager of the season, having sacked Rafael Benitez after a humiliating 2-1 loss to Norwich City.

Former manager and current Belgium boss Roberto Martinez was linked with a surprise return to Goodison Park, which would have seen him manage the Toffees and Belgium at the same time.

However, a deal could not be agreed with the former Wigan Athletic manager and Everton had to consider alternative options.

And two of those options will reportedly be Lampard and Rooney, as the former England team mates have been shortlisted for interviews.

Reports from the Telegraph understand Everton owner Farhad Moshiri and club chairman Bill Kenright are strongly considering the former Chelsea and Manchester United stars for the position.

Lampard is yet to manage a club since his brutal sacking from Chelsea last year, while Rooney is currently trying to mastermind a miracle escape from relegation with Lampard’s former side Derby County.

Rooney’s side have incredibly moved off the bottom of the table in the Championship, despite having 21 points deducted over the course of the season.

The Rams have won four of their last five matches and are now only five points from safety.

Rooney began his footballing journey on the blue side of Merseyside, bursting through their academy teams and onto the Premier League scene when he was only 16-years-old.

He returned to the club in the summer of 2018, before departing the club in the 2020 January transfer window to join Major League Soccer side DC United.

Meanwhile, Lampard has been on the lookout for a new role ever since he lost his job as Chelsea manager last year.

Despite leading the Blues to a fourth placed finish and the FA Cup final, whilst navigating the club through a transfer ban, Lampard was replaced by Thomas Tuchel in January last year.

Two further candidates are also believed to be in the running for the Everton position, but they are currently unknown.
