West Ham 'up pursuit of Man United's Jesse Lingard after England axe'

West Ham to ‘up their pursuit of Manchester United star Jesse Lingard now he is no longer part of England’s Euro 2020 set-up’ as David Moyes hopes to make loan deal for the livewire forward permanent after last season’s heroics

  • Midfielder Jesse Lingard enjoyed a successful loan spell at West Ham last season
  • The Manchester United man scored nine times to get the Hammers into Europe
  • West Ham will reportedly try and get Lingard permanently after his England axe
  • Lingard was cut from the Three Lions’ 33-man provisional squad for Euro 2020

West Ham are looking to accelerate their pursuit of Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard now the midfielder has been cut from the England squad, according to reports.

Lingard was named in Gareth Southgate’s 33-man Three Lions provisional squad for this summer’s European Championships, but the 28-year-old did not do enough to make it into the final 26-man side for the tournament, which begins this week.

The midfielder enjoyed a successful loan spell at the Hammers earlier this year, which ultimately proved the difference for David Moyes’ side earning a Europa League spot.

And according to The Sun, West Ham are hopeful that the club can arrange a permanent transfer for Lingard, who is currently on course to return for Manchester United duty when the pre-season campaign begins.

Lingard scored nine Premier League goals for the Hammers last season and registered five assists, which brought him back into the picture for an England spot in 2021.

The form earned the 28-year-old a spot in Southgate’s England squad for the March World Cup qualifiers and was close to being a part of the European Championships, which the Three Lions are one of the favourites to win.

Lingard remained part of the England squad for their pre-tournament friendlies against Austria and Romania, even though he was told he was not going to be part of the final 26.

With the midfielder now heading off on his summer break, he posted a positive message of support to the England camp ahead of their first group game against Croatia on Sunday.

‘When it comes to being involved with the boys and representing my country I’ll never stop smiling,’ he posted alongside an image of himself playing for his country.

Lingard was exiled by Manchester United before joining the Hammers on six-month loan deal

‘I’ll be supporting the team all summer! Good luck to the lads! Bring it home’.

Lingard was exiled by Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the start of the season but could be given a chance to impress at Old Trafford once again when preparations for the new season get back underway.

The midfielder has played over 200 games for the Red Devils since making his first-team debut in the 2014-15 season, scoring 33 goals.
