Willian is always a “top” professional in training and will soon find his feet at Arsenal, says the club’s technical director Edu.
The Gunners snapped Willian up on a free transfer in the summer and autumn window following his departure from London rivals Chelsea in August.
Having played a key part in two Premier League title triumphs during his seven-year stint at Stamford Bridge – along with FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League successes – there were high hopes for the Brazilian winger when he arrived in north London.
Yet so far his switch across the capital has gone disastrously; he has failed to find the back of the net in his first 15 appearances for Arsenal, who are down in 15th after losing seven of their first 12 games of the campaign.
Mikel Arteta’s side have struggled to score in the Premier League this term, registering just 10 goals so far, and Gunners fans are beginning to lose patience with Willian.
However, Edu says the 32-year-old is always focused on the training ground and therefore insists it is only a matter of time before he turns his form around.
“Listen, everybody knows Willian. If people say that he’s not a good footballer then maybe they don’t know football because he has always performed at the top, top level. Then he moved,” the Arsenal chief said.
“For me, Willian is a question of time to be performing how we know he can.
“What do you expect? Do you expect it straight away? Boom! Willian can be the best one? But he needs a little bit of time, it’s strange as well to say that but you need time to know the players who you are going to play with.
“Sometime you receive the ball in positions, sometimes in other positions, Mikel wants to play forwards, the other one wants to play to the side, there’s a little bit of adaptation.

“Players need time to understand how to train, how to work with the people, to understand a lot of things and I told him that I know that and I hope that people from outside understand that as well. That’s happening with Willian.
“Training, he’s training properly. His behaviour? Top, as always. Training? Fantastic. For me, it’s just a question of timing.”
