Andy Murray has posted a blunt message for Manchester United fans after many of the club’s supporters appeared to make a U-turn in their feelings for Cristiano Ronaldo. Murray’s brother Jamie is known to be a fan of the Red Devils, however Andy divides his support between Hibernian and Arsenal.

Ronaldo had been touted for a move to United’s great rivals Manchester City on Thursday, with the Portuguese forward’s future having been up in the air for the entire summer transfer window.

However, in a shocking turn of events on Friday, Ronaldo is now set to return to the scene of his successes in the late 2000s with a move to Old Trafford.

Manchester United fans were livid on social media when it looked as though he might join their mortal nemeses across the city, and Murray was one of many to point out the remarkable change of tone in many of the fans’ opinions when the transfer news turned in their favour.

Murray said on Twitter: “All the Man United fans that were absolutely abusing Ronaldo yesterday appear to have lost their voices today…. Funny old game.”

Piers Morgan was one of the big names to respond to the post, as he reacted with laughing emojis to agree with the tennis star.

Murray was in action this week at the Winston-Salem Open in North Carolina.

He won his first-round tie against Noah Rubin in dominant fashion, before succumbing to Frances Tiafoe in two closely fought sets.

Murray was due to face friend Nick Kyrgios in the first round, but the Australian withdrew just moments before the clash was due to start.

US Open draw IN FULL: Murray faces Tsitsipas, Djokovic learns fate

Rubin filled in as Murray’s opponent on short notice.

Murray described the incident as “by far the strangest situation I have ever been in before a match”.

Murray faces a tough task next week at the US Open after learning his draw for the tournament. The Scot faces Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round. The Greek is currently placed at fourth in the world rankings.

While Murray made his way into the last Grand Slam of the year with a wildcard, his compatriot Emma Raducanu was not so fortunate. The 18-year-old has been playing in qualifying this week, and needs one more win to make it into the first round proper.

The teen sensation won her first two qualifying matches comfortably – breezing past Bibiane Schoofs and then Georgia’s Mariam Bolkvadze in straight sets.

She now faces Egypt’s Mayar Sherif in the last game before the full draw. The US Open gets underway on August 30 at Flushing Meadows.

Novak Djokovic is looking to complete a calendar Grand Slam having won all three men’s majors so far this year.

A win in New York would take him past Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s record tally of 20 Grand Slam titles.
