Emma Raducanu has gone further than she thought at the US Open this year – so far in fact that she predicted she’d have already been on the plane home by now.
The talented 18-year-old recorded the biggest win of her career on Wednesday as she defeated Belinda Bencic 6-3, 6-4 to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
This is only Raducanu’s second appearance at a Grand Slam having first burst onto the scene in her run to the fourth round at Wimbledon earlier this year.
The Brit had to go through qualifiers in order to enter the main draw and it seems she wasn’t expecting to get as far as she has with her original flights home booked for before the main draw even got underway.
‘Yeah, I have just been focusing one day at a time, taking care of each day,’ she said.
‘When you’re playing tournaments, you just get into this sort of autopilot mode of your routines, recovering on the day off in between.
‘I didn’t expect to be here at all. I mean, I think my flights were booked at the end of qualifying, so it’s a nice problem to have (smiling).
