  • Taylor Fritz was losing against Cameron Norrie when he called for the trainer
  • However, the physio refused to give Fritz a three-minute medical timeout
  • Fritz posted on Twitter that he felt the pain in his right elbow earlier in the match
  • When he felt it get worse, he said he wanted it treated so he could finish playing
  • Norrie went on to beat Fritz and then defeat Brandon Nakashima in the final
  • The victory over Nakashima made it the first ATP singles title in Norrie’s career 

Taylor Fritz has defended himself on Twitter after an incident which saw a physio refuse to treat him during a stoppage against Britain’s Cameron Norrie.

Norrie was leading 6-3 4-1 in the semi-final at the Los Cabos Open when the second-best American men’s player called for the trainer, citing discomfort in his right elbow.

However, the trainer dismissed the player’s concerns and refused to allow a three-minute medical timeout, saying, according to tennis journalist Jose Morgado: ‘I just saw you serve, you don’t look in pain. That’s my call.’

However, the world No 39 was refused treatment as the physio said he didn’t look injured

Fritz was forced to play and lost the next two games as Norrie progressed to the final.

Taking to Twitter after the loss, Fritz said: ‘It’s upsetting because I wanted to call the trainer earlier but my arm wasn’t as bad and I figured I would play through and see if it got better.

‘I felt it getting worse so I wanted treatment in hopes of being able to finish out the match without pain.

Norrie went on to beat Fritz and then defeated Brandon Nakashima for his first ATP singles title

‘Realistically I’m down a set and 1-4 (so) coming back is v tough. I just wanted to see if maybe we could make it feel better and I could finish the match feeling better. 

‘More than anything I was just shocked and pissed being treated like I’m trying to pull some icing bs on a friend.’

Norrie landed up winning the tournament, beating Brandon Nakashima 6-2 6-2 for his ATP singles title.
