Carlos Alcaraz defeated Frances Tiafoe in a thrilling and dramatic US Open semi-final – but one fan left onlookers in shock as she ignored the on-court entertainment on Friday. Cameras caught a woman knitting during the five-set thriller at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Spanish teenager Alcaraz reached his first Grand Slam final by seeing off American star Tiafoe in five sets. The third seed won 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 6-1 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 to book his place in the final.

Alcaraz has never reached a major final before, but the 19-year-old has dominated headlines after climbing the rankings and starring all season. His win over Tiafoe was his third successive five-set match as he became the youngest man to reach the US Open final since Pete Sampras in style.

The performance ended the sensational run by Tiafoe, who was hoping to become the first American to reach the men’s final since Andy Roddick won the 2003 US Open. The marathon match apparently wasn’t entertaining enough for one fan, though.

During the match, cameras panned and found a woman knitting while taking in the scenes. The incident drew amusing responses online, with one fan asking: “Imagine being in the same room as Michelle Obama, watching an epic tennis match, and all you ca. [sic] think about is knitting.”

It is not the first time this week that a viral moment has happened in the Flushing Meadows stands. Earlier this week, YouTube star JiDion received a haircut in the stands during Nick Kyrgios’ quarter-final defeat to Karen Khachanov.

Casper Ruud defeated Khachanov in the other semi-final, ensuring he has another shot at winning a maiden Grand Slam title after losing to Rafael Nadal in the French Open final earlier this year. The World No.7 has revealed he is ‘surprised’ at his run at the fourth and final major of the season.

Alcaraz will face Ruud in Sunday’s final, with World No.1 status also on the line. The champion will replace Russian star Daniil Medvedev atop the rankings after he crashed out in the last 16.
