Conor McGregor slams UFC rival Tony Ferguson for ‘worst quote in fighting’

Conor McGregor has hit out at UFC rival Tony Ferguson in a now-deleted Tweet after Ferguson labelled himself the "best of all time".

Ferguson was the interim UFC lightweight champion while McGregor held the main title but was busy taking time away from the sport to face Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match. The pair have been repeatedly linked with a potential fight and Ferguson was asked about the chances of him taking on McGregor ahead of UFC 279.

'El Cucuy' is set to face Li Jingliang at the event, having moved up to fight at welterweight for the first time since 2011. And Ferguson quickly dismissed talk of a fight with McGregor, saying: "McNuggets – he lost his sauce.

"GOATS [Greatest of all time] come and go but BOATS staying floating. I'm a BOAT – I'm the best of all time.

"That's a title that's not gonna go anywhere, I'm always gonna be the f****** champ. No one's going to do what I've done for this sport."

McGregor responded by branding Ferguson's comment "the worst quote in fighting" in a Tweet which has since been deleted. Ferguson's upcoming fight with Jingliang is his first since he was brutally knocked out in May by a front kick from Michael Chandler.

The kick knocked Ferguson out cold for almost two minutes and was branded "the most vicious knockout I've ever seen" by UFC president Dana White.

McGregor also mocked Ferguson on Twitter following the knockout, writing: "If you pulled that out of a McDonald's bag, you'd dip it in sauce and eat without a moments thought – no doubt. That would pass as a legit chicken nugget. That's crazy."

However, McGregor later expressed remorse, writing: "I'm upset I went at Tony like that. Out straight. Wtf team, this is not a nice app nor does it encourage nice behaviour toward each other.

"43 billion, man pull that and say 'sike' who give a f***, really. No one. Dip to a dip on the ship. The carry the toys ship. Leave a beast a beast."
