Conor McGregor’s baseball pitch branded ‘worst of all time’ after awful fail

If one thing is certain, Conor McGregor definitely hasn't been using his spare time while recovering from injury to work on his pitching arm.

While there's no doubting he has a mean swing with his left arm, a punch is pretty much the only thing the Dubliner can throw.

That was proven in pretty humiliating fashion on Tuesday night when the MMA fighter was invited to throw the ceremonial first pitch before a baseball game between the Chicago Cubs and the Minnesota Twins.

UFC star McGregor is the latest in a long line of famous faces to have been invited to throw the first pitch at a Major League Baseball event.

While some manage to escape with their dignity relatively intact, many often end up embarrassing themselves with a pitch which goes anywhere but the middle of the catcher's mitt.

And that's exactly what happened to The Notorious, whose throw was full of power but completely devoid of any sort of accuracy.

The catcher looked shocked as he watched the ball sail a long way high and wide of its target, before hitting the wall separating the stands from the field of play.

Even McGregor, who was wearing a light-coloured suit with navy shirt, couldn't help but crack a smile after his dismal effort.

But he insisted afterwards that he was "happy" with the throw, even if he did admit: "The accuracy was a little off."

Is this the worst baseball pitch of all time? Let us know in the comments section.

Unfortunately for the Irishman, it is not the first time he has shown a lack of aptitude for American Sports.

He was laughed at in 2018 after he was caught on camera throwing an American football at an NFL game, with commentators doing their best not to be too critical but observing that it is "not his strength".

McGregor's putrid pitch rivals that of rapper 50 Cent, whose dreadful throw before a game in 2014 is generally regarded as the worst ever attempted.

Podcast Mark Pavelich thinks the UFC fighter's effort might have been worse, though, writing on Twitter: "@TheNotoriousMMA just made @50cent look good and to think, we all thought that was never going to be possible."

ESPN's MLB pitching analyst Rob Friedman also described it as "the worst first pitch of all time".

McGregor has been recovering from a horror leg break sustained in his last MMA outing, a trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July.

Just 10 weeks later, though the fighter says he feels ready to kick again as he showed off the scars on his leg from the surgery he needed to fix his broken tibia.
