US Open defending champion Iga Swiatek was surprised by Andy Murray’s choice of a preferred doubles partner. The Poland native is competing at this year’s edition of the American Grand Slam where she bids to successfully defend her title.

Ahead of her first match at Flushing Meadows this year, the 22-year-old took to social media to reply to a clip of the 2012 US Open winner choosing her as his preferred doubles partner. The world No. 1 reacted to the clip with a shocked face emoji along with a GIF illustrating a surprised look on a dog’s face with the caption: “What?”

The pair would certainly make a formidable doubles team, especially at the US Open, a tournament both players have won. Swiatek began the defence of her title with a resounding 6-0, 6-1 win over Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson. The top seed blasted 20 winners to just two from her opponent and recorded her 18th bagel of the year. Swiatek wrapped up the win in just 58 minutes and it marked her 16th consecutive straight-sets first-round victory at a Grand Slam dating back to Wimbledon 2019.

“I am certainly very happy. I feel like I could have played proactively from the beginning and never stopped,” she said post-match. “I’m happy that it was such a good first round because usually, the first rounds are difficult. Also, I’m glad I had time to put into practice all the things I’ve been working on.

“I think it’s even more tricky because in Slams we have time to get used to the courts or just to have more time to feel everything better. We have usually one week off before, you know.” Last year’s US Open win was Swiatek’s first and so far only Grand Slam victory away from the hallowed clay courts of Roland Garros, where she’s won three titles.

The 2023 edition of the US Grand Slam marks the first time she has headed into Flushing Meadows as the defending champion and commented on the pressure on her shoulders she has not previously experienced in New York. “Usually, this is, yeah, the case, that you have to just get used to everything, you know,” Swiatek said. “Sometimes you just feel a little bit more pressure because you’re, like, not into a rhythm yet and you just kind of have to, like you can get distracted more easily, I feel.

“I remember when I played my first matches in the US Open, I always felt like there is so much going on around, and it was a little bit tougher to focus. This year I didn’t feel it, because I practiced a couple of times on the centre court. Even, you know, with all the kids around, because I think the entry was free and so many people came to watch our practices. It was amazing and I got used to the noise and everything.”

More info

Murray on the other hand, is due to begin his campaign against Frenchman Corentin Moutet today. Should the Brit prevail, he will set up a meeting with Bulgaria’s 19th seed Grigor Dimitrov. “I’ve never played against him [Moutet] before and I’ve practised with him once,” the three-time major winner said of his next opponent.

“He’s a hugely talented guy but he’s not the biggest so he tends to play quite a lot of long points but he’s got tons of variety, he’s got good hands up at the net although he can be a bit volatile at times but a good challenge for me.

“He’s very different to how a lot of the guys play in the draw because the game is based around big serves and power. I’d say he’s the opposite of that really, so a good test for me.”

Source: Read Full Article

Chinese tennis star Wu Yibing on his journey to ATP Tour US Open defending champion Iga Swiatek was surprised by Andy Murray’s choice of a […]

[12
