Manchester United loanee Brandon Williams made a horror start to his Ipswich Town career by scoring an own goal inside the first two minutes of his full debut.

The young defender, who joined the Championship club on a season-long-loan last week, made his first appearance for the side by coming off the bench during their 4-3 defeat to Leeds at the weekend, but was thrust into the starting line-up for the Tractor Boys' EFL Cup clash with League One outfit Reading on Tuesday night.

But he accidentally knocked the ball into his own net after just 74 seconds when it ricocheted off his boot after being parried by goalkeeper Cieran Slicker as Williams was scrambling back to catch Reading forward Caylan Vickers.

Luckily for the 22-year-old, Ipswich were level by half-time, and in front by the hour-mark, but a late Royals equaliser took the game to penalties.

Williams was denied the chance to make amends for his own goal as he'd already been subbed off by the time the shootout rolled around, but it didn't matter as his Ipswich progressed to the third round with a 3-1 penalty victory.

Williams was once considered the long-term replacement for Luke Shaw at Old Trafford, but a series of ill-timed injuries and lengthy spells on the bench have threatened to derail his fledgling career.

He's played over 50 times for United, but has barely featured for the club since leaving on loan to join Norwich at the start of the 2021/22 season.

Injury troubles saw him miss the club's first pre-season with Erik ten Hag last summer and when he returned to full fitness in December, he barely got a look in.

The defender made just one appearance under the Dutchman last season and appeared to be person non grata after being left out of the matchday squads for United's opening two Premier League games this season against Wolves and Tottenham.
