Carlos Alcaraz took a rest day in between matches at the US Open on Sunday. The world No 1 is set to take on surprise package Matteo Arnaldi, who is through to the second week of a Major for the first time in his career. But Alcaraz reportedly opted not to train ahead of his first meeting with the world No 61.

Alcaraz will continue his US Open title defence on Monday after advancing to the second week. And the 20-year-old will be well-rested as he decided not to head to Flushing Meadows for a practice session on his day off, according to Marca.

The two-time Grand Slam champion will instead be joining his family for a sightseeing day in New York, as Alcaraz and his team believe that he has trained enough during the first week of the tournament. It’s not the first time that the world No 1 has allowed himself to rest on his days in between matches at Majors.

Alcaraz previously used the tactic at Wimbledon ahead of his final against Novak Djokovic. And it proved successful as he became the first man in 10 years to defeat the Serb on Centre Court.

Just in Young US Open fan rejects personal Tommy Paul invitation into player’s box[LATEST]

With temperatures in New York reaching 32 degrees on Sunday, it means Alcaraz will be able to stay out of the heat and keep himself fresh for his first meeting with Arnaldi. Like Alcaraz himself, the Italian is a product of the Next Gen Finals – a tournament pitting the top eight players aged 21 and under against each other.

While the Spaniard was able to capture the title at the Next Gen tournament back in 2021, Arnaldi was unable to win a match when he contested the event last year. But a whole host of players who appeared in the under-22 event have gone on to achieve success this year.

As well as Arnaldi’s US Open run. Jiri Lehecka made the Australian Open quarter-final and Lorenzo Musetti defeated Novak Djokovic in Monte Carlo. “Yeah, it’s very nice, I mean, too also because I think we are all friends,” the world No 61 said.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. If they do good results, you think that you can do maybe also you or your friends. So maybe some tapes or just seeing them playing that kind of matches, it gives you some more energy maybe or just more power to go on court.”

If Arnaldi has been inspired by the success of his fellow young players, then Alcaraz will be at the top of the list of his role models. When he won last year’s US Open at the age of just 19, the Spaniard also became the youngest world No 1 in ATP history. And he is now bidding to be the first man since Roger Federer in 2008 to successfully defend his title in New York.

Source: Read Full Article

Carlos Alcaraz took a rest day in between matches at the US Open on Sunday.
