Manchester United legend and Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville twice dug at the lack of possession Erik ten Hag’s side enjoyed during the first-half of their away trip against Arsenal.

United had found themselves under the cosh for the majority of the first 45 minutes at the Emirates.

And in one of the Red Devils’ only forays into the Arsenal final third, Marcus Rashford pushed back Ben White and curled United ahead in sumptuous fashion, whipping a right-footed effort across Ramsdale and in via the post.

But United soon surrendered their lead just one minute later as Martin Odegaard slammed home an equaliser from 12 yards out.

United had been forced to work hard to create any openings throughout the opening half, and Rashford’s goal was the perfect case of their counter-attacking power.

But for the most part, Arteta’s Gunners had United on the back foot and Neville on commentary duty was left questioning: “Which way are United kicking?” After a touch map was shown highlighting how little of the ball the visitors had in Arsenal’s half and final third.

Just minutes earlier, Neville showed his appreciation for United goalkeeper Andre Onana, whose role in Ten Hag’s playing out from the back system was evidently shown by the number of times he found himself on the ball.

Neville said: “Onana has been the best outfield player so far which is a bit of a problem. United just have not got going at the moment.”

The beginning of the second half started in a similar vein for United but as the second half progressed, so did United’s play, and the introduction of Rasmus Hojlund for his debut gave United a greater outlet up front – seeing United look more dangerous as the game went on.

And United thought they had won the game just minutes from time after Alejandro Garnacho coolly slotted past Aaron Ramsdale, but a VAR check ruled the goal out for the closest of offside calls.

But deep into added time, United were left crestfallen after Declan Rice smashed home Arsenal’s last-gasp winner in the 96th minute before Gabriel Jesus wrapped it up in the 101st minute.
