Damon Hill has insisted that Toto Wolff is ‘hurting’ as a result of Red Bull’s recent success after taking aim at Max Verstappen over the weekend. The Mercedes boss was left reeling as Verstappen cruised to another simple victory at the Italian Grand Prix to mark his 10th win in a row.

The result saw Verstappen set a new record for the most successive F1 victories, although Wolff was in no mood to sing his praises after the race. He instead chose to dismiss the achievement as nothing more than extra filler for the statistics page on Wikipedia.

“I don’t know whether he cares about the record,” said Wolff. “It’s not something that would be important for me, any of those numbers. It’s for Wikipedia and nobody reads that anyway.”

Hill has since accused Wolff of being disrespectful to Verstappen, who he believes should have received more credit from the Mercedes team principal. He went on to suggest that Red Bull could end up winning every Grand Prix between now and the end of the season, with their nearest rivals still a long way off the pace.

JUST IN: Carlos Sainz caught in robbery chaos and Lewis Hamilton punished

“It sounded a bit churlish and not very gracious, and unlike Toto because he’s usually very sporting,” Hill told Sky Sports News. “I think he’s hurting a bit now. They know what it’s like to be dominated and they didn’t even get on the podium.

“They seem to be a bit stymied and can’t seem to work out what to do, but who can? Ferrari did a great job in Monza. It suited their car, I think, but it seems like everywhere we go, the Red Bull has got the upper hand and we’ve just got to sit and watch this unfold. Can Red Bull win every race in the season? That’s not beyond the realms of possibility.”

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. The pair made contact as they battled with each other at Turn Four but the punishment did not stop Hamilton from claiming a sixth-placed finish.

George Russell, meanwhile, came home ahead of his Mercedes colleague in fifth but was also given a penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage while scrapping with Esteban Ocon. Hill later insisted that slow progress is being made by the Silver Arrows but they will need to wait until next year before they can start fighting Red Bull for Grand Prix victories again.

“I think they’re beavering away back at the factory in Brackley furiously and they probably have a title contender in their back pocket,” added Hill. “They just can’t use it this year because it won’t fit on this particular car, so it won’t be until next year when we’ll see that.”

Follow our Express Sport page on Instagram here.

Source: Read Full Article

Max Verstappen sent offer to quit Red Bull and join F1 rival keen to be his team-mate Damon Hill has insisted that Toto Wolff is […]

[21
