Mikel Arteta’s long-term future has been thrown into question by former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit. The Frenchman does not think the Gunners manager will stick around for long once he achieves success at the Emirates.

Arteta will bring up four years as Arsenal boss in December. He hasn’t won a trophy since lifting the FA Cup in his first season in charge in 2020.

However, the Spaniard has overseen a major overhaul at the Emirates which has seen Arsenal finally return to the Champions League. Last season he came close to leading the club to their first Premier League title in 19 years.

The Gunners ultimately came up short against a relentless Manchester City side. But there are promising signs that the 2022/23 campaign won’t be the peak of this Arsenal generation.

The former midfielder played under Arsenal’s longest-serving manager, Arsene Wenger, winning the league and FA Cup double in 1998.

He cannot see Arteta matching Wenger’s 22 years in charge. Petit instead reckons Arteta will look at a new challenge once he has led Arsenal to some silverware.

Petit told BettingSites.co.uk: “Anything can happen in football, especially with some of the crazy money now. Mikel Arteta is improving a lot as a manager since he arrived and, just like the players, the Champions League will be very interesting for him – as well as a test of his maturity and management.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. If he does very well, and I have a feeling that he will do something good with Arsenal, maybe he will want to go somewhere else.

“It’s very rare now to see a manager stay at the same club for 20 years, especially with the new owners and shareholders who do not think in the same way at football.”

Arteta last signed a new contract at Arsenal in May 2022. The deal committed him to the club until the summer of 2025.

The Sun reported in April that Arsenal chiefs had put a delay on talks over a new deal until the summer. However, there is yet to be an official announcement on a renewal.

Source: Read Full Article

Mikel Arteta’s long-term future has been thrown into question by former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit.
