Daniil Medvedev booked his place in the US Open final with a stunning win against Carlos Alcaraz – then teased the Flushing Meadows crowd by calling for more noise. The Russian then branded the crowd in New York “unbelievable” but also called out some of Alcaraz’s fans for their behaviour.

Medvedev pulled off a four-set win to book his spot in Sunday’s final against Novak Djokovic. The Russian put in a brilliant display in a hard-fought match to deny Alcaraz a repeat of last year’s triumph.

The mesmerising match had fans on their feet at Arthur Ashe Stadium – but Medvedev still gestured for them to make more noise as he soaked up the applause. After shaking hands, he walked back to the middle of the court gesturing for fans to get louder after his performance.

Speaking on the court after the match, Medvedev hailed the crowd. But he was upset with some making noise between his serves at a key stage of the match before he came out on top.

“I have to be honest, the crowd was unbelievable today,” he said. “Absolutely unbelievable and` I mean it. I felt love to both sides.

“The only thing is maybe 1,000 Spanish guys at 5-3 started screaming between 1st & 2nd serves. That’s not so nice. But I guess they were desperate.

“I’m happy it didn’t help them. They can go to sleep now.”

Medvedev edged the opening set in a tie-break then stormed to the second set 6-1. However, Alcaraz attempted to mount a comeback by taking the third set 6-3 and he had two break points early in the fourth.

Don’t miss… Yet Medvedev battled back, saving another break point later on before holding serve in the final game to take it 6-3 and wrap up a memorable win. Djokovic now awaits in a mouth-watering clash after the Serbian comfortably beat Ben Shelton in straight sets.

Addressing his performance, he sad: “I said I needed to play 11 out of 10. I played 12 out of 10 except the third set!

“That’s the only way. I don’t know if he still 20 or 21 but two Grand Slams already. World number one for many weeks. It’s pretty unbelievable, I think nobody has done it before him.

“To beat him, you need to be better than yourself. I managed to do it.”

Source: Read Full Article

Daniil Medvedev booked his place in the US Open final with a stunning win against Carlos Alcaraz – then teased the Flushing Meadows crowd by […]

[12
