Two of the best tennis players on planet Earth battle it out for the right to be crowned the 2023 US Open champion tonight. After eliminating top seed and defending champ Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev is now out to down Novak Djokovic for the second time in the final of this Grand Slam.

The 23-time Grand Slam winner is looking to leave Flushing Meadows with his fourth New York crown but was beaten in 2021 by Russian Medvedev. He has revenge in his sights today.

The veteran Serbian hasn’t won a record 23 Grand Slam titles for no reason and will retake his position at the pinnacle of the world rankings once his US Open final match has been settled – regardless of whether he wins or loses.

Djokovic’s four ATP tour title wins this year include the Cincinnati Open just a week before Flushing Meadows, where he laid down a marker by beating Alcaraz in an epic three-set final during which the Spaniard was foiled on a championship point.

And Djokovic and Medvedev aren’t just putting it all on the line for the prestige of winning another Slam. They can pocket big money from lifting the winner’s trophy on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The US Open is proud of the fact that it has awarded the same level of prize money for both male and female competitors for the last 50 years, but that equality does not mean that organisers have cut any corners when it comes to dishing out the winnings.

Whoever wins the US Open men’s singles final on Sunday will not only get a gleaming trophy but also a cheque for around £2.4m ($3m). That’s about £50,000 more than Alcaraz collected for winning Wimbledon this summer.

Can Djokovic move on to 24 Slams? Or will Medvedev deny him again and claim his second major? We’ll find out tonight…

Source: Read Full Article

Chinese tennis star Wu Yibing on his journey to ATP Tour Two of the best tennis players on planet Earth battle it out for the […]

[12
