David Coulthard disagrees with Lewis Hamilton’s suggestion that Max Verstappen has not had tough team-mates in F1. Hamilton caused a stir when he played down Verstappen’s current dominance in F1 by insisting he’s had stronger team-mates than his rival.<\/p>\n

Hamilton said: \u201cIn my personal opinion, all my team-mates have been stronger than the team-mates Max has had: Jenson, Fernando, George, Valtteri, Nico. \u201cI\u2019ve had so many. These guys have all been very, very strong, very consistent \u2013 and Max has not raced against anyone like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sergio Perez has struggled to keep up with Verstappen this year and has fallen 145 points behind his team-mate. The likes of Nico Rosberg and Martin Brundle agreed with Hamilton’s main argument, although they both questioned why the Briton felt the need to make that point.<\/p>\n

His remarks didn’t go down well in the Red Bull camp with Verstappen calling his rival “a little jealous” of his current dominance in the sport. Coulthard dismissed the team-mate argument altogether though, insisting the main aim for any driver is to simply beat your “biggest competitor”.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know Lewis had made a comment that he does not have tough team mates,” Coulthard told Formula1.com. “First of all, that’s not the case, and second of all it’s not actually about who your team mate is, it’s about who your competitors are, and his biggest competitor so far has been Lewis.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd they have been unbelievable in the way they have gone wheel-to-wheel, and performed, and really delivered some great results. Whether you are a Mercedes fan, a Ferrari fan, it doesn\u2019t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cThis sport brings exceptional drivers. Lewis is an exceptional driver, Fernando [Alonso] is an exceptional driver, Max is an exceptional driver, and this is just the facts. And in wait we have Charles [Leclerc], Carlos [Sainz], Lando [Norris], George [Russell], and the list goes on.<\/p>\n

“These guys have shown great potential but are yet to win multiple races and championships.\u201d And Coulthard is tipping his compatriot to bring the fight to Verstappen from next year after the 38-year-old penned a new two-year deal.<\/p>\n

He said: “Lewis has shown his pedigree. Seven-time world champion, could have been nine times, could’ve been 10. The reality is he’s got that, he’s signed for another two years, he has got the hunger, he has been exceptional all the way from karting to where he is now, and now we will see what Mercedes give him as a car.\u201d<\/p>\n
