The old saying goes that romance is dead – and Neil 'Razor' Ruddock perhaps hasn't done his bit to subvert the stereotype.

Or at least his first attempt at bedding wife-to-be Leah Newman in Saddam Hussein's old bedroom might have been considered as lacking in the love department. That's especially true if one considers the encounter was streamed to an audience outside, unbeknown to the former Premier League star.

The events unfolded when Ruddock, 55, was invited on a trip to Iraq to entertain the British troops at the height of the war. He and his party – which included one-time Playboy model Newman – were based at one of Hussein's old palaces, which is where Razor grasped his opportunity to do a No. 2 in the former dictator's 18-carat gold loo.

Writing in his autobiography, The World According to Razor, the ex-Liverpool and Tottenham defender revealed his attempts to then seduce Newman in the adjoining bedroom. Although his attempts at a 'quick wrestle' were spurned, Ruddock's efforts hadn't gone unnoticed with the other attendees.

"When me and Leah stepped out of the lift into reception there were about a hundred squaddies and as soon as they saw us they all started cheering and gave us a massive round of applause," wrote Ruddock. "It turned out there were CCTV cameras everywhere apart from the bog, thank God, and my failed wrestling match had been broadcast for all to see.

"Thank God she said 'no', that's all I can say! Imagine having your own sex tape before you've even had a date."

There was another Page 3 model, Jo Guest, who accompanied the pair on the trip as another form of entertainment for the troops. However, Ruddock only had eyes for Newman and said he was 'smitten' by the time they'd got to Baghdad.

"Just as I suspected, Leah did eventually succumb to my charms (no woman could resist them for long), and when we arrived back in England we started seeing each other," the story continued. "I always describe her as being my best mate and that's no exaggeration. She makes me laugh like nobody else I know."

The pair eventually married in September 2013 and celebrate their 10-year anniversary this month. And it all began with a truly unique (almost) roll in the hay, with a group of spectators on hand to witness the moment their love started to flourish.

Ruddock was previously married to his first wife, Sarah, for seven years prior to their divorce in 2005. He and Leah share two children, Pebbles and Kizzy, the former of whom was already six by the time they were wed.

Ten years deep and still going strong, Ruddock and Newman's union is proof that romance can come in many shapes and forms. And for the happy couple, it turns out broadcasting that love for all to see was the ticket to a sturdy relationship.
