They didn&#8217;t have the money to do those types of signings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;They&#8217;re not very good at the moment. There&#8217;s no hysteria. I went to the Brighton game as a fan thinking, &#8220;Could I be surprised?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;You&#8217;re always optimistic. I have never walked over that forecourt at Old Trafford and not been optimistic because that&#8217;s the job of a football fan going to any ground where you support your team.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;But 72,000 Manchester United fans in that stadium, who are informed and know Brighton and know their current team, I don&#8217;t think any of them were surprised at what they saw.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Before the game there was that feeling of, &#8216;Let&#8217;s see what happens&#8217; and &#8216;take a point&#8217;, those sort of comments speaking to people as you go in.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Brighton proved far superior to United, with goals by Danny Welbeck, Pascal Gross and Joao Pedro handing them a fourth consecutive win over the Reds in the league.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/18\/09\/75548595-12530565-image-a-20_1695025539698.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>United captain Bruno Fernandes walks off dejected after Saturday&#8217;s dismal loss to Brighton<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/18\/09\/75548609-12530565-image-a-21_1695025558969.jpg\" height=\"432\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The pressure is already mounting on manager Erik ten Hag to turn their fortunes around<\/p>\n<h3>United summer spend\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>Rasmus Hojlund (from Atalanta) &#8211; \u00a372m<\/p>\n<p>Mason Mount (Chelsea) &#8211; \u00a360m<\/p>\n<p>Andre Onana (Inter Milan) &#8211; \u00a347m<\/p>\n<p>Altay Bayindir (Fenerbahce) &#8211; \u00a34.2m<\/p>\n<p>Jonny Evans (free agent) &#8211; Free<\/p>\n<p>Sofyan Amrabat (Fiorentina) &#8211; loan<\/p>\n<p>Sergio Reguilon (Tottenham) &#8211; loan<\/p>\n<p><span>TOTAL: \u00a3183.2m<\/span><\/p>\n<p>United paid an initial \u00a364m &#8211; potentially rising to \u00a372m &#8211; for Danish striker Hojlund, \u00a355m for England midfielder Mount and \u00a343.8m for Cameroon goalkeeper Onana.<\/p>\n<p>They also signed back-up goalkeeper Altay Bayindir and brought back veteran defender Jonny Evans, as well as bringing in midfielder Sofyan Amrabat and left-back Sergio Reguilon on loan.<\/p>\n<p>But after defeats to Tottenham, Arsenal and Brighton already this season, there is considerable doubt United have made any forward progress as a result.<\/p>\n<p>They were linked to both Rice and Kane, who ultimately move to Arsenal and Bayern Munich respectively for \u00a3100m-plus fees, but were shackled by Financial Fair Play considerations.<\/p>\n<p>United&#8217;s only wins so far &#8211; against Wolves and Nottingham Forest &#8211; were highly unconvincing and they now open their Champions League campaign with a daunting visit to Bayern Munich on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Neville fears that Ten Hag, in common with many of his predecessors, has too much influence over transfer policy, which has led to a drop-off in overall quality.<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8216;What I am hoping at the moment is that this is just a difficult start to the season and it&#8217;s not a repeat of what we have seen previously, where it became challenging for [Jose] Mourinho, for [Louis] Van Gaal, for [David] Moyes, and obviously for [Ralf] Rangnick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;So, I hope that this is not the beginning of that. I just wonder how good they are. That is my concern.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The club has been pulled from pillar to post over this last 10 or 11 years from a sporting point of view because of their manager&#8217;s wishes on recruitment. And it&#8217;s happened again.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;They are Erik ten Hag&#8217;s players, those are the ones he wanted, Jose brought in the lads that he wanted, like [Romelu] Lukaku and [Paul] Pogba and those lads, Van Gaal went for a very technical type of players, loads of left-footed centre backs and left-backs and stuff like that.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;They have all brought in who they wanted to bring in. I thought this time there would be a stronger sporting project behind the scenes that would enable Manchester United to bring in a group of players.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;But Manchester United have again allowed the manager to influence the signings and that is my concern with the club.
