Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has refused to speak badly of the Glazer family despite the Manchester United owners denying him several blockbuster signings during his tenure. The former United boss has revealed five players he wanted to recruit but couldn’t due to budget limitations at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer spent three years at the helm before his sacking at the end of 2021, making an array of big-money additions, including Harry Maguire and Jadon Sancho.

But United were linked with several high-profile names while Solskjaer was at the club, names who have since completed huge moves elsewhere.

The Red Devils have spent big in the decade since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, but the Glazers have been the subject of furious protests over their reluctance to boost the budget with their own money.

It has left the club limited on occasions when the most attractive players have come available under David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag.

But the Norwegian hasn’t criticised the Glazers for their over-reliance on United’s natural revenues to upgrade the manager’s playing squad.

He told The Athletic: “In my conversations with them, they were honest and upfront. I had to be patient and mentally strong — and I was. And they’ve backed the manager now.”

Erling Haaland, before he made his Salzburg debut,” Solskjaer added.

“Declan Rice, who wouldn’t have cost what he did in the summer. We discussed Moises Caicedo, but we felt we needed players ready for there and then.

“Brighton are very good at letting players come from abroad and find their feet for a year and a half. At United, you don’t have that luxury, and that has cost the club loads of players.

“We wanted Jude Bellingham badly — he’s a Man United player, but I respect he chose Dortmund. That was probably sensible.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. Young players prepared to come into a team that wasn’t 100 per cent there like it was when I arrived.

“I would have signed Kane every day of the week, and my understanding was that he wanted to come. But the club didn’t have the budget with the financial constraints from Covid-19. There was no bottomless pit.”

All five players have since joined other European heavyweights and will remain the subject of ‘what could’ve been’ debates at Old Trafford.

But one thing is for certain. Solskjaer likely wouldn’t have left the job without a trophy if he had brought at least one of those names through the door.

Source: Read Full Article

Man Utd train ahead of Bayern Munich clash Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has refused to speak badly of the Glazer family despite the Manchester United owners […]

[19
