Manchester United have held ‘an extraordinary all-staff meeting’ about how the club dealt with issues surrounding Mason Greenwood and Antony.

Manchester United news, exclusives and analysis

Greenwood left Old Trafford last month following the club’s internal investigation into his actions and has joined Getafe on a season-long loan.

The 21-year-old was suspended by United in January 2022 after he was arrested and subsequently charged by Manchester Police with attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault.

All charges against Greenwood were dropped in February but United decided to conduct their own probe, eventually deciding to loan the player to Getafe.

Antony, meanwhile, has been placed on a mutually agreed leave of absence following accusations of domestic abuse.

The 23-year-old’s former girlfriend, Gabriela Cavallin, has alleged that she was physically attacked by Antony on multiple occasions during their time together in Manchester and in their native Brazil.

Two more women, Rayssa de Freitas and Ingrid Lana, have also made accusations of abuse against the Brazil international. Antony has denied all the allegations made against him and has vowed to clear his name while Greater Manchester Police are investigating.

It has now been reported by The Athletic that United chief executive Richard Arnold has held a huge meeting with staff at the club over both Greenwood and Antony among other topics.

The staff meeting was held on Monday and employees submitted a series of anonymous questions for Arnold to answer over how the club handled the issues surrounding both players.

The Athletic report Arnold was asked if he could promise staff that Greenwood would not return to United’s first team and he replied: ‘There’s no expectation of Mason playing for Manchester United.’

Other areas were also discussed, with staff believed to be concerned over the lack of clarity surrounding a potential takeover, as well as the debt which keeps building under the Glazer family.

One member of staff asked Arnold if there needed to be a resolution for the ‘wellbeing’ of the club and he responded by telling them that United had ‘sufficient funds’ in place to cover current bills, with a strategic review process still ongoing.

Arnold was then quizzed why United were lagging so far behind Manchester City and he insisted that the Red Devils were ‘making progress’ and ‘chasing down’ their rivals.
