Sheffield United have announced that women’s player Maddy Cusack has died at the age of 27. The Premier League club released a statement on Thursday confirming that their player and marketing executive Cusack had tragically passed away on Wednesday, with tributes made to the ‘popular’ footballer.

Cusack had been with the club since 2019 and made over 100 appearances for the Blades’ women’s team. She also worked as a marketing executive within the club.

Described as a ‘valued colleague’ by the Yorkshire club, she moved over from the Sheffield United Community Foundation to join Sheffield United in 2021 to help their marketing department while continuing to feature for the club, who currently play in the Women’s Championship.

A club statement posted on X, formerly Twitter, read: “Sheffield United Football Club is devastated to report the sad news of the passing of Maddy Cusack. The Club and Maddy’s family would appreciate a period of privacy and will not comment further at this sad time.”

Stephen Bettis, United’s chief executive officer, paid tribute to Cusack and said the club would provide support to her family during this difficult time.

“This is heartbreaking news for everyone at Bramall Lane,” he said. “Maddy had a unique position of being part of a number of teams at Sheffield United and was popular with everyone that she came into contact with.

“Her personality and professionalism made her a credit to her family – she will be sadly missed. Whilst taking in the news and moving forward, the Club will offer as much support as possible to Maddy’s family, friends and colleagues.”

Chelsea Women’s Lucy Watson, who joined the Blues from Sheffield United in 2022, posted a tribute on her Instagram page. Alongside an image of the pair, she wrote: “I’ve never felt like this before. I love you Mads”.

Fellow clubs Aston Villa, Birmingham and Rotherham, in addition to the Football Association, all tweeted their condolences and tributes to Cusack.

Sheffield United have opted to keep discussions over tributes and a ceremony celebrating Maddy’s life private.
