Top Gear's first Stig Perry McCarthy has urged the BBC to reveal the specifics behind Freddie Flintoff's Top Gear crash as the cricket legend continues his work in the England camp.

Presenter Flintoff, 45, was back working with the national team on Friday and led a nets session at Nottinghamshire's Trent Bridge. The two-time Ashes-winner recently made his first public appearances since flipping an open-topped Morgan Super 3 while filming for Top Gear in December 2022, joining England's staff in a casual role ahead of their ODI series against New Zealand.

And McCarthy – who drove on the series as the original 'Stig' during its first two seasons – wants the BBC to go public with details of Flintoff's 130mph accident ahead of the one-year anniversary.

"Freddie's background is a sportsman, he's highly competitive, but it is not driving," said the former masked man during a recent appearance on GB News. "And sometimes I feel that maybe there's a bit of a need to contain the enthusiasm to protect enthusiastic and talented drivers like Freddie or talented personalities like Freddie from themselves.

"So everything's conjecture at the moment. And that's what I'm critical of is why don't we know exactly what has happened?"

Reports have indicated Flintoff was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, which is understood to have left some Top Gear crew members with PTSD. One source told the Mail on Sunday certain members of the production were uncertain whether they'd return to the show after being signed off work.

It was also reported Flintoff was left waiting for 45 minutes at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome – the home track of Top Gear – before he was picked up by an air ambulance. Plastic surgeon Riccardo Frati told Daily Star Sport Flintoff's injuries could have been minimised if he had been wearing a helmet at the time.

The A League of Their Own captain has kept covered up despite his return to the England camp, often wearing sunglasses and a bucket hat while coaching. However, there are scars visible on his nose and chin, though Frati said the injuries could recover in time.

McCarthy wished Flintoff well and said he imagined the current presenter went through 'an awful lot of pain' following the crash. He also credited the cricket as one of the main reasons the show has made a resurgence in recent years but said his enthusiasm must be tempered by those in positions of responsibility.

The 34th season of Top Gear was postponed last year following the crash so that a 'thorough health and safety investigation' could take place. However, there have been no further updates on any findings or outcome of said investigation almost one year on.

Daily Star Sport has contacted the BBC for comment.
