{"id":289692,"date":"2023-09-23T12:34:20","date_gmt":"2023-09-23T12:34:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportstoft.com\/?p=289692"},"modified":"2023-09-23T12:34:20","modified_gmt":"2023-09-23T12:34:20","slug":"ben-stokes-opens-up-on-his-battle-with-hair-loss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportstoft.com\/%d1%81ricket\/ben-stokes-opens-up-on-his-battle-with-hair-loss\/","title":{"rendered":"Ben Stokes opens up on his battle with hair loss"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Ben Stokes opens up on how his battle with hair loss was &#8216;getting too much&#8217; before he underwent a transplant in 2018&#8230; as he explains many of his England team-mates are now thinking about having one<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ben Stokes is one of England&#8217;s greatest cricketers of all-time and Test captain<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><span>He revealed he had a hair transplant after his hair loss impacted his confidence<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Mail Sport&#8217;s new WhatsApp Channel: Get the breaking news and exclusives here<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ben Stokes has revealed the personal battle he faced when he realised he was losing his hair and how it impacted his confidence.<\/p>\n<p>The England captain is one of his country&#8217;s greatest cricketers of all-time, with the all-rounder having put in numerous world class performances to win games over the years, while he is also a double white-ball world champion.<\/p>\n<p>Stokes has been responsible for transforming the Test team&#8217;s fortunes from one win in 17 matches before his appointment last year, to 13 in 18 under him and led his side superbly during the summer&#8217;s enthralling drawn Ashes series.<\/p>\n<p>However, Stokes opened up on how his mental health suffered when he began to suffer from hair loss, before the England captain underwent a hair transplant in 2018 at the Wimpole Clinic on Harley Street in London.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I saw the (TV) footage of myself, and the angle would be a bird&#8217;s-eye view, straight on top,&#8217; he told The Telegraph.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/23\/11\/75756265-12552157-image-a-33_1695464842251.jpg\" height=\"425\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Ben Stokes has revealed the personal battle he faced when he realised he was losing his hair<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/23\/12\/75756789-12552157-Stokes_had_noticed_his_hairline_was_slightly_receding_while_he_a-m-70_1695468548720.jpg\" height=\"385\" width=\"306\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/23\/12\/75756785-12552157-He_explained_he_received_many_compliments_after_the_transplant_w-m-72_1695468565296.jpg\" height=\"385\" width=\"306\"><\/p>\n<p>Stokes (left &#8211; before the transplant) had noticed his hairline was slightly receding, while he also had a growing bald patch, before he received compliments after it (right &#8211; post-transplant)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/23\/11\/75756223-12552157-image-a-34_1695464847678.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>He explained his confidence suffered before he underwent the transplant (pictured in 2023)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/23\/11\/75756643-12552157-image-a-55_1695466193031.jpg\" height=\"414\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Stokes (pictured in 2018) said his hair loss was at &#8216;the point where it was getting too much&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I thought, &#8216;God, this is getting worse and worse&#8217;. Men and hair, it&#8217;s a thing. The procedures used to be kept quiet. It was almost one of those things where you didn&#8217;t want people to know you had had it done.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;There&#8217;s so much more to it than just losing your hair. If you start thinning, you notice, and you&#8217;re constantly trying to do something to make it not look as bad. As people get older, they want to have a good head of hair.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Stokes also explained he wanted to destigmatize transplants, given hair loss is a problem that impacts millions of men.<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8216;So whatever they can do to make them feel better about themselves, why not? I know how I felt, from all the compliments I received. It gives you so much confidence. The stigma and the secretiveness have gone.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I&#8217;m lucky in that I&#8217;m quite tall, so I was standing above most people. But it just got to the point where it was getting too much.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;So I went in, got it done, and as soon as I started seeing the results, it gave me so much more confidence, knowing that I didn&#8217;t have to worry about it as much as I did beforehand.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Wimpole Clinic explained how Stokes&#8217; transplant may not have been noticeable to the public as he took action while he hair was still relatively thick and full, with this described as a &#8216;preventative hair transplant&#8217; by experts.<\/p>\n<p>Using the FUE technique, the surgical team extracted 1,800 grafts from the back of his scalp and moved them towards to the crown and temple of his head.<\/p>\n<p>This technique is also preferred as it leaves virtually no scarring and heals within a few weeks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Stokes&#8217; recovery was particularly speedy due to his vigilant aftercare when he didn&#8217;t wash his hair for 14 days and slept in a certain position to avoid any damage, with the results clear to see.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Stokes revealed how some of his England team-mates have also undergone similar transplants after discussions in the dressing room, while others are contemplating it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/23\/12\/75756777-12552157-image-a-61_1695466822514.jpg\" height=\"400\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/23\/11\/75756441-12552157-image-a-54_1695465526689.jpg\" height=\"774\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>He is determined to destigmatize transplants, given hair loss is a common problem for men<\/p>\n<p>That dressing room has been boosted in recent weeks by the presence of England legend Andrew Flintoff, who returned to the national team as a mentor for the One Day series against New Zealand after suffering horrific facial injuries in a high-speed crash when filming Top Gear in 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And Stokes explained what a pleasure it has been to have Flintoff around the team and how much the poster boy of the 2005 Ashes enjoyed being back involved in the sport after launching a highly successful broadcast career following his retirement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;After his cricket career, Freddie&#8217;s personality was perfect for TV,&#8217; said Stokes. &#8216;But then you see him make a comeback, and you can picture him being involved as a full-time coach.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;He loved every minute of it. He said that he was in awe of what he was witnessing. Every day he spent with us, he grew more confident within himself.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Stokes was back involved for that series after reversing his ODI retirement and it came after some time off following an enthralling but exhausting Ashes for the 32-year-old, with England&#8217;s hopes of an improbable comeback thwarted by two days of rain in the fourth Test at Old Trafford.<\/p>\n<p>He continued: &#8216;I was knackered. It had been pretty draining, both physically and emotionally.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;For two nights (in Manchester), I was waking up multiple times, checking if it had stopped raining.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I was doing all sorts on the final day to try to make the rain go away but it didn&#8217;t work. I wouldn&#8217;t look out of the window for a whole two hours and then I was praying that if I did look out, it would be sunny again. But it wasn&#8217;t.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/23\/11\/75590337-12552157-Freddie_Flintoff_s_facial_scars_were_showing_signs_of_healing_we-a-36_1695464987149.jpg\" height=\"439\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Stokes also explained what a boost it was to have Freddie Flintoff back and around the team\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/23\/11\/75756229-12552157-image-a-35_1695464975569.jpg\" height=\"402\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Stokes has transformed England&#8217;s Test fortunes and led them to a 2-2 series draw in the Ashes<\/p>\n<p>Despite the 2-2 series draw which saw Australia retain the Ashes, Stokes is as optimistic about the future as ever.<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8216;<span>I&#8217;ve never been one to map out how many runs or wickets I want. Now that I&#8217;m 32, I&#8217;m very realistic that things will come to an end at some point.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8216;But I have my eyes set on something I want to be a part of for the next three to four years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I can&#8217;t see myself not being involved somehow, even once I&#8217;ve stopped playing.
