Max Verstappen has cemented himself as the star of the show at Red Bull after winning back-to-back World Championships for the team. His team-mate, however, continues to struggle in comparison.

Sergio Perez’s 2023 season has been a rollercoaster of emotions. The Mexican driver won two of the first four races to stamp his mark on the title battle but has since failed to win a single Grand Prix, dropping 151 points behind his world champion team-mate.

Checo’s performances have been underwhelming, to say the least, but with none of the team’s alternative options ready to make the move for 2024, the 33-year-old is expected to at least see out his contract with Red Bull.

With Perez likely to be out of the picture for 2025 and beyond, Red Bull have four options to consider for the second seat, all of which come with certain caveats and advantages. These are the four most likely to mount a bid for Checo’s seat…

The McLaren star has featured on the podium three times this season already and has cemented his reputation as one of the most talented drivers in the series. He would be capable of winning races and taking the fight to Verstappen.

Unfortunately for Red Bull, the Bristol-born driver is contracted to McLaren until the end of the 2025 campaign and Zak Brown will be extremely reluctant to let go of his poster boy, especially without a major pay-off. The second question regarding Norris is whether or not the reigning champions even want a driver who can regularly take points off Verstappen.

Daniel Ricciardo’s 2023 campaign has been one of extreme highs and lows. The popular Aussie started out the season as a test and reserve driver, made a sensational return to replace Nyck de Vries in Hungary and then broke a bone in his hand at Zandvoort, ruling him out for four races and counting.

With Ricciardo controversially retained by AlphaTauri ahead of rookie Liam Lawson, it is clear that Red Bull believe the 34-year-old can rediscover his form. Add in his close personal relationship with Verstappen and knowledge of the inner workings of life in Milton Keynes and he becomes a compelling alternative to Checo for Christian Horner and co.

More F1… We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. More info

Yuki Tsunoda is another option for Horner to consider, particularly if the team want to return to their roots of promoting Red Bull driver academy graduates into the senior team. The young Japanese driver took time to develop consistency in F1, but has been a team leader for AlphaTauri in 2023 in his third season in the sport.

The 23-year-old put pen to paper on a one-year contract extension ahead of his home race in Japan, although with his main backer Honda departing to join the Aston Martin project for 2026 and beyond, we will soon see how much faith Red Bull really have in Tsunoda’s development moving forward.

The curveball option for Red Bull would be a shock reunion with Alex Albon. The Thai-British driver spent 18 months as Verstappen’s team-mate before he was ousted to make room for Checo, although his development since then has been nothing short of sensational.

So far in 2023, the 27-year-old has scored 100 per cent of Williams’ points and has unqualified team-mate Logan Sargeant at all 16 rounds. Helmut Marko has also expressed a degree of interest in bringing Albon back into the fold at Milton Keynes, although any return to Red Bull would hinge on Williams not continuing the positive development trajectory they are on.

Source: Read Full Article

Max Verstappen has cemented himself as the star of the show at Red Bull after winning back-to-back World Championships for the team.
