Derby County goalkeeper Josh Vickers has posted a heartbreaking tribute to his wife Laura following her death – just three months after they got married.

Laura passed away on Tuesday following a long battle against cancer. Accompanied by a picture of the couple on their wedding day earlier this year, Vickers wrote: "I have written and unwritten this so many times and still can’t find the right words to say and don’t know if I ever will.

"On Tuesday evening my wife lost her long battle against cancer… Laura is the strongest, bravest and most loving person I have ever met. Even though everything she was going through, she continued to smile, never letting anything get in the way of having a good time and making a lifetime of memories. We have cried, laughed and danced our way through some tough times.

"Thank you to everyone that has supported myself and both families through this incredibly difficult time.
Truly fortunate to have the most amazing family and friends! I Love You Always & Forever [heart emoji]."

Derby players showed their support for their grieving team-mate by holding up a shirt with Vickers' name on the back following Saturday's win at Carlisle. The Rams shared Vickers' post and wrote: "We are right behind you, @JoshVickers1."

Derby supporters and other clubs were quick to show their support for the former Arsenal, Swansea and Lincoln keeper and his family. West Brom wrote: "The thoughts of everyone at West Bromwich Albion are with Josh, along with Laura’s family, friends and loved ones."

Black & White Together, a Derby supporters' group, posted: "Our thoughts are with you Josh and your family." Non-league Matlock Town added: "Sending our love and thoughts to @JoshVickers1 as well as Laura's family and friends at this incredibly difficult time."
