Mohamed Salah broke another Premier League record after he opened the scoring for Liverpool in their 3-1 home win against West Ham from the penalty spot on Sunday.

Salah won the penalty just 16 minutes into the game as he was brought down by Nayef Aguerd after he was caught by the Hammers defender as he jinked inside onto his left foot. After winning the spot kick, Salah picked himself up and duly converted it.

The Egyptian put the Reds in front as West Ham’s early pressure was made redundant when Salah scored his record-breaking opener, becoming the first player to score or assist in 12 consecutive Premier League games twice in his career.

After falling behind early on, David Moyes’ side equalised before half-time through a diving header from Jarrod Bowen. But second half goals from Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota guided Liverpool to a 3-1 victory for the third game in a row, and their fifth consecutive top-flight win.

Salah first achieved the feat between August to December 2021, and is currently on a hot streak that began back in April this year. And it’s not the first record that Salah has broken during his time at Anfield after he previously became the league’s highest-scoring African player, eclipsing Chelsea legend Didier Drogba’s 104, with today’s goal taking Salah to 141.

The Anfield hero’s latest record comes just days after he scored his 42nd goal in European competitions for Liverpool after scoring in the Reds 3-1 Europa League game against Austrian side LASK Linz.

That goal saw him equal Thierry Henry’s European goal record at Arsenal, meaning that no one has scored more European goals for an English club. And given Liverpool still have five group stage games remaining, it’s likely that Salah will not only claim the record for his own this year but eclipse the Frenchman’s tally.
