It comes as no surprise that golfers at the top of their game can rake in some serious cash on a regular basis. This year American golfer Scottie Scheffler took home a whopping £17.2 million after wins at The Players Championship and the Phoenix Open.

But there are some tournaments where pride and a place in the history books is worth more than a colossal pay-day – and that’s where the Ryder Cup comes in.

Despite being one of golf’s most prestigious tournaments players receive no prize money for competing at the event. No matter if you win or lose, everyone walks away with the same – zero.

While some tournaments, such as the season-ending Tour Championship, pay out eye-watering sums from a prize pot of more than £60million to the best-performing golfers, the Ryder Cup is a clear exception. But it’s rare that a player leaves completely empty-handed.

Players are rewarded for their efforts in other ways and often see large sums of money, generated by sponsorships and TV rights, put back into the community. As is often the case for Team USA.

Each year, no matter the result, the PGA of America awards each player on the 12-man team £163,000 ($200,000). The money is then split into different pots and awarded to various organizations, causes and charities.

With one half golfers are allowed to choose an organization of their choice to award the money to. The remaining £80,000 ($100,000) is given to a specific golfing initiative or educational charity that has been chosen by the PGA of America.

In 2021 a number of youth charities were chosen to receive a lucrative cash injection, including the Drive, Chip, & Putt Championship, the PGA Junior League Golf and the Boys & Girls Club of America.

More info

For Team Europe a different tradition is adhered to that dates back to 1983 when English golfer, and 4-time PGA Tour winner, Tony Jacklin first captained the team.

Each player in the 12-man European team is presented with a unique gift that differs from year to year – underlining the honour of featuring. Back in 2018, captain Thomas Bjorn gave each player a personalized Rolex watch.

The same gesture is also often made by the captain of the losing team, if they are gracious in defeat. In 2018 the USA lost to Europe, with captain Jim Furyk presenting the European players with a bespoke decanter to mark to occasion.

Despite the gifts there is a much bigger prize on offer, the Ryder Cup itself. Only a select few golfers get to write their names into the history books which is worth something that money can’t buy.

Source: Read Full Article

It comes as no surprise that golfers at the top of their game can rake in some serious cash on a regular basis.
