Darren England and Dan Cook who were on VAR duties during the Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool fixture have been replaced for upcoming matches.

VAR contributed to a controversial moment in Saturday's (September 30) big game when Luis Diaz's goal in the first half was incorrectly disallowed for offside. Fans were left confused after it was revealed Sky Sports weren't given any images of lines being drawn for the goal in order to render it offside. It was only following Liverpool's 2-1 defeat that the PGMOL released a statement, admitting the goal should have stood.

The statement said: "PGMOL acknowledge a significant human error occurred during the first half of Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool. The goal by Luis Diaz was disallowed for offside by the on-field team of match officials. This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention, however, the VAR failed to intervene.

"PGMOL will conduct a full review into the circumstances which led to the error. PGMOL will immediately be contacting Liverpool at the conclusion of the fixture to acknowledge the error."

The outbreak from the controversy has begun with the two officials relieved of their duties for the Nottingham Forest v Brentford game on Sunday (October 1) and the Fulham v Chelsea fixture on Monday (October 2). Some fans on social media aren't satisfied with their punishment however, with one writing: "Nightmare, still keep their jobs and still get paid thousands."

Others called for them to be dismissed of their jobs as one X user commented "They need to be sacked managers get sacked for not being good at their jobs" while another echoed their sentiments as they said: "Throw them out, replacing them for one odd fixture isn’t a solution. Sack them!" While action has been taken against Darren England and Dan Cook, it comes as little comfort for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool, who missed out on three points as the German said the apology from the PGMOL "helps no-one".

"Who does that help? We had that situation in the Man Utd game. Did Wolves get the points for it? We won’t get the points for it. We all thought that when VAR came in it would make things easier. I never saw a game like this with the most unfair circumstances, crazy decisions."

Miguel Delaney of The Independent reported that Howard Webb, the technical director of the PGMOL, spoke to Liverpool after their game and issued an apology.
