Things would have been so, so different if I\u2019d done that,\u2019 Topley tells Mail Sport, about the incident during an England practice in Brisbane last year that left his T20 World Cup dream in tatters.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Even now I think, \u201cIf I hadn\u2019t injured my ankle maybe I wouldn\u2019t have also later done my shoulder\u201d. It\u2019s like the butterfly effect.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I think, \u201cIf I\u2019d let that catch go I would have been playing in the first game of the World Cup a couple of days later against Afghanistan\u201d. Instead I was watching from the sidelines.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Topley, 29, was watching because he had badly ruptured ligaments and damaged muscles around his left ankle trying to take a catch when he trod on one of the eight-inch-high foam \u2018Toblerone\u2019 boundary markers that were a feature of the T20 World Cup in Australia.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/02\/21\/76087003-12585951-image-a-1_1696278159200.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Reece Topley is fully fit after recovering from a serious ankle injury and dislocated shoulder<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/02\/20\/76084791-0-image-a-82_1696274379926.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The England bowler missed out on T20 World Cup glory after suffering a freak injury<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I actually wish I hadn\u2019t stayed and watched that first game and had gone home straight away instead, because it was tough,\u2019 Topley tells Mail Sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Thinking about it now does bring back memories of eventually travelling home on my own with my leg in a plastic boot. That\u2019s my memory of the World Cup. I don\u2019t have anything else.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It was at the start of the World Cup and I was bowling well. Then when I got back to London I was walking around in the boot and people were recognising me.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018They were saying, \u201cWe miss you\u201d and it was nice of them but I knew we wouldn\u2019t because our batters can chase down anything.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Topley was correct in thinking England would do just fine without him. They won that World Cup in Melbourne by beating Pakistan in the final, with the left-arm seamer who was meant to be spearheading their attack watching on TV back home in London.<\/p>\n<p>It was said at the time that Topley, as an original squad member, would receive a World Cup winner\u2019s medal. But he does not even have that small consolation prize. \u2018No, I never got a medal,\u2019 he says. \u2018I\u2019m not really too fussed about that because I never played a game.\u2019 No medal and no regrets, it seems, from governing body ICC whose advertisement-laden boundary markers were proved to be dangerous by Topley\u2019s accident.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018There was no apology from the ICC,\u2019 he says. \u2018I don\u2019t think I was the only player to be injured by one of those sponge boundary markers, so hopefully they have been looked into.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018If not they should be. It wasn\u2019t a freak incident. It was a health and safety issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018People say they love seeing amazing boundary stops but when these markers are halfway up your shin it makes them harder and nullifies the point of making them soft because they crumble.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Now is the time for the bad memories to stop because Topley, plagued by back injuries earlier in his career that almost forced him out of the game, is fully fit after recovering from both that serious ankle injury and the dislocated shoulder that also brought a premature end to his IPL.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/02\/20\/76085135-0-image-m-85_1696275085259.jpg\" height=\"416\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Topley in line to play in the 50-over World Cup opener against New Zealand on Thursday<\/p>\n<p>Topley is now in India with England and has every chance of playing in their 50-over World Cup opener, against New Zealand in Ahmedabad on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I have moved on from it and there\u2019s another World Cup to prepare for and hopefully I\u2019ll play a bigger part in this one,\u2019 he says.<\/p>\n<p>The next seven weeks in India provide a bowler who is highly regarded by England captain Jos Buttler and coach Matthew Mott with the chance of a happy ending to what over the last year has been a story of \u2018the rug being pulled from under my feet\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It would be huge to be a World Cup winner,\u2019 says Topley.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sport\/cricket\/article-12585951\/Reece-Topley-missed-T20-glory-suffering-freak-injury-tripping-foam-boundary-marker-paceman-wants-help-England-retain-50-World-Cup.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read Full Article<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>Reece Topley missed out on T20 glory after suffering a freak injury by tripping on a foam boundary marker&#8230;
