A recent statement from Liverpool insists the club will “explore the range of options available” to them after Luis Diaz’s goal was wrongfully chalked off by VAR during their controversial 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. Even though the PGMOL have admitted that the goal should have stood it is unlikely the final result will be changed despite the major blunder playing such an important part in the game.

However, in 1999, Tottenham’s north London rivals Arsenal offered Sheffield United a rematch in the fifth round of the FA Cup after Marc Overmars scored a “sickening goal” to win the game for the Gunners. One of football’s unwritten rules is to kick the ball out of play when an injured player goes down to allow them to receive treatment.

When Lee Morris pulled up during the match, Steve Bruce’s side kicked the ball out of play so that their medical team could see to the Blades striker. As is commonplace, Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour then threw the ball back to his opposing goalkeeper Alan Kelly to gift possession back to Sheffield.

Unfortunately, Nwankwo Kanu, who was making his debut for Arsenal at the time, didn’t get the memo and latched onto the ball before squaring it to Overmars for a tap-in. Sheffield United were incensed by the lack of sportsmanship but the situation was quickly smoothed over when Arsene Wenger stepped in and offered the Blades a chance to replay the match at Highbury.

Wenger’s gracious offer was accepted by all parties involved, including the FA, and the replay took place 10 days later while the previous result was overturned. Arsenal went on to win the game 2-1 once again with Overmars and Dennis Bergkamp getting on the scoresheet for the north Londoners.

Many football fans have petitioned for the same to be done for Liverpool vs Tottenham after the encounter was marred by controversy. One petition on Change.Org entitled “Replaying the Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool Football Club Fixture for Premier League Integrity” has received 300 signatures since it was added to the website last night.

The PGMOL have since apologised to Liverpool for the “significant human error” but Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has refused the apology on the grounds that it won’t change the outcome of the game.

“Who does that help? We had that situation in the Man Utd game,” said Klopp reacting to the PGMOL statement. “Did Wolves get points for it? We won’t get points for it. We all thought that when VAR came in it would make things easier.

“The decision was made really quick for that decision. It changed the momentum of the game. It was super difficult but the boys dealt extremely well with it.”

Arsenal’s new kit for 2023/2024 is a stylish twist on a classic as it reinvents that mid-1990s vibe.
