Liverpool’s appeal over Curtis Jones’ red card against Tottenham has been unsuccessful, with the midfielder now ruled out of Premier League contention until November.

The 22-year-old was initially shown a yellow card by referee Simon Hooper in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat after catching Spurs midfielder Yves Bissouma on his shin.

But Hooper was referred to the pitch-side monitor by VAR to take a second look at the challenge and upgraded the punishment to a red card.

Liverpool thought they had scored soon after but the goal was incorrectly ruled out for offside – with PGMOL releasing the audio surrounding the blunder on Tuesday evening.

The Merseysiders went on to lose the match after a stoppage-time own goal from Joel Matip while Diogo Jota was also sent off for two bookable offences as the visitors ended the contest with nine men.

Jurgen Klopp was unhappy with Jones’ dismissal afterwards, saying: ‘Curtis steps his foot on the ball and rolls the legs.

‘Whatever you do with that. It was not a bad tackle. He stepped on the ball. He steps full throttle on the ball and then he goes over the ball.’

Liverpool submitted an appeal over the red card on Monday but have been unsuccessful, with the Reds confirming he will serve a three-match suspension.

A statement on Tuesday evening read: ‘Curtis Jones is set to serve a three-match Premier League suspension after an appeal to overturn the red card he received at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday was unsuccessful.

‘The midfielder was initially shown a yellow card for a challenge on Yves Bissouma in the 26th minute of the fixture at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

‘However, that was upgraded to a straight red following VAR intervention.

‘Jones will now not be eligible for the Reds’ encounters with Brighton & Hove Albion, Everton and Nottingham Forest this month.

‘Meanwhile, Diogo Jota will also serve a one-match suspension following his sending off for two yellow cards, ruling him out of Sunday’s trip to the American Express Community Stadium.’

Jones will be able to play against Union Saint-Gilloise and Toulouse in the Europa League but will not be back in Premier League contention until Liverpool visit Luton Town on November 5.
