The MCC have expelled an England cricket fan for life after Australian cricketers were verbally abused at Lord’s during the Ashes.

The incident occurred at lunch on day five of the second Test after England’s Jonny Bairstow had been dismissed in controversial fashion when Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey threw the ball at the stumps at the end of an over. Bairstow had already left his crease to speak with Ben Stokes, under the impression it was a dead ball with the over finished, but was given out.

It saw the Lord’s crowd respond with hostility towards the tourists. Boos greeted the Australians when they left the pitch at lunch and television cameras picked up an exchange in the Long Room between MCC members and both Usman Khawaja and David Warner, with security forced to step in.

Immediately after the bust-up, the MCC, the owners of Lord’s and the ‘guardians’ of the laws of the game, suspended three members. An MCC statement at the time said: “They will not be permitted back to Lord’s whilst the investigation takes place.”

That investigation has now concluded with one member being banned from the body for life, one being suspended for four-and-a-half years and another being barred for 30 months. However, the names of the trio will not be released.

An MCC statement issued today (Thursday), said: “Details of the disciplinary process are confidential, and the Club will not be publishing the names of the three individuals who have been sanctioned.

“The actions of the three individuals in the Pavilion on the day in question fell well below the behaviour expected from our Members. The penalties set out above are the consequences of breaching the Club's Code of Conduct. MCC will not be making any further comment on the matter at this time.”
