Peter Shilton has defended Kevin Keegan after the ex-England boss caused a stir when he said "wasn't keen" on women pundits discussing the men's game.

Speaking to an audience of approximately 250 people in Bristol, Keegan said: “I’m not as keen, I’ve got to be honest, and it may not be a view shared. I don’t like to listen to ladies talking about the England men’s team at the match because I don’t think it’s the same experience. I have a problem with that.”

And ex-England keeper Shilton has now suggested he thinks he knows what Keegan was getting at when he made the comments.

When appearing on GB News, Shilton said: "I think you know this day and age with equal opportunities in many things you know women and men come together so much. I've always been a big supporter of the women's football, especially the last five or six years.

He added: "I personally can see what Kevin was getting at. I think it's been taken out of context… I think basically what he's actually saying, would women play against men in the men's game? No, they won't because of obvious other things.

"And you know, should a woman who's probably been at the top of her career in the last four or five years in the women's game, be put in front of maybe somebody that's got 15 year’s experience of top class international football?”

However, ex-Lioness Lianne Sanderson slammed the former England international and manager as ‘irrelevant’ in response to his controversial comments.

And fans were also quick to criticise Shilton – memorably out jumped by 5ft 5in Diego Maradona when the Argentinian scored the infamous 'Hand of God' handball goal against England at the 1986 World Cup – branding him a 'dinosaur'.

A number of X (formerly Twitter) users said in response to his comments: "A dinosaur defending a dinosaur."
