Scott McTominay came off the bench to score twice in injury-time and snatch an incredible win for Manchester United over Brentford as despair turned to utter delirium at Old Trafford.

McTominay revealed that he was inspired by David Beckham’s new Netflix documentary and memories of United’s late comebacks under Sir Alex Ferguson after his heroics in the victory.

‘Two goals at the death was incredible — that might be one of my favourite moments on a football pitch,’ said McTominay.

‘It’s hard to put into words because I’ve been at Man United my whole life, since I was five years old. For me, this football club means everything. I was watching David Beckham’s documentary last night and it’s things like that that inspire. [Sir Alex] was always looking at his watch like that. It just shows today you can score a last-minute winner. It’s brilliant.’

McTominay revealed that he could not hear what manager Erik ten Hag told him on the touchline when he came on in the 87th minute. ‘It was very loud,’ he said. ‘The fans were roaring us on so I couldn’t hear fully. He probably said something like “Go on and score” which is what I did.’

Scott McTominay netted an excellent brace late on to give Manchester United a comeback win

The first of McTominay’s goals was an smartly take half volley in the 93rd minute of the game

When this was put to Ten Hag afterwards, the Dutchman joked: ‘I said score two goals!’

McTominay could have left his boyhood club in the summer when United were prepared to cash in on the Scotland midfielder if the right offer had come in.

‘When there is the right price then every player has a price but he has a big value, sporting and also economic,’ said Ten Hag.

‘I want to have a player like Scott McTominay in the squad. He is Man United in every way. Every minute he will fight for the match.’

United were heading for their third home defeat in a week until McTominay struck twice in seven minutes of added time.

It transformed the mood inside Old Trafford and Ten Hag can now go into the international break with a little breathing space.

United bounced back from their midweek loss to Galatasaray in the Champions League

Manager Erik ten Hag was pleased with his side’s ability to show strong grit and determination

‘On the line you don’t have time to be in doubt, you have to think until the last minute how you can turn this,’ he said. ‘These games give fuel to the dressing room.’

But there will still be concerns that United were so poor for large parts of the match after they fell behind to Mathias Jensen’s first-half strike.

Ten Hag added: ‘The players know how far they have to go to get results. It can’t be easy going. In football it is eat or get eaten. Too many times in the first half of this season we got eaten by opponents who are more hungry. This can’t be.’

Brentford boss Thomas Frank said: ‘Football is brutal in moments like this. I would probably still have been devastated if it was 1-1.’
