Erik ten Hag will want his Manchester United players battling for every ball in the fight for revival – but not against each other.

Amid a sea of heads-in-hands moments at Old Trafford so far this season, Victor Lindelof and Sofyan Amrabat took the cake with one exchange on Saturday. The Red Devils were struggling to threaten from 1-0 down at home to Brentford before a last-minute Scott McTominay brace rescued all three points.

But the home fans could only groan when Sweden defender Lindelof was sent falling face first into the Old Trafford turf after a clash with his team-mate. There are plenty at the club who would like to bury their heads given this season's misfortunes, but Lindelof's tumble took the term to new heights.

And supporters wouldn't quite believe what they were witnessing as the players literally fell over one another after conceding first for the fourth home league game in a row. Some even likened the display to something straight out of the circus after Lindelof and Amrabat's acrobatic gaffe.

"Comedy show at [the] Theatre of Dreams every weekend," mocked one spectator. "Book your seats now."

Others laughed at the incident and said such sights were available 'only at Old Trafford'. "United is becoming a Championship club," raged one social media user in frustration.

United came into Saturday's clash having suffered back-to-back home defeats against Crystal Palace and Galatasaray, while Brighton also won at Old Trafford earlier this term. It was fortunate for the hosts that Scott McTominay's 94th-minute equaliser spared their blushes at the death.

The unlikeliest of three-point hauls shouldn't mask the fact that United looked abject for much of Saturday's encounter. And super-sub McTominay may be expecting a push into Ten Hag's XI after some of his midfield team-mates went missing for patches.

Amrabat is one of those whose place in the team may be at risk following his tangle with Lindelof. The Moroccan was brought in over the summer to give the squad a boost – but propelling them directly over his shoulders isn't what the manager had in mind.
