Matt Doherty and Eric Dier have left Premier League fans chuckling with their debate over a controversial penalty call.

The Republic of Ireland and Wolves defender was not penalised for a push in the back of Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins during their 1-1 at Molineux on Sunday (October 8) which was overlooked by former referee Dermot Gallagher on Sky Sports on Monday.

Replying to the judgement, Doherty replied on X (formally known as Twitter): "Never." To which his former Spurs colleague replied: "Penalty." The right-back responded: "Experience."

Dier then continued: "Laziness." One amused fan said in the comments: "Eric and Matt back and forth with one word beefing." A second chuckled in regards to his playing time: "Brave with that one, Eric."

The 29-year-old has sat on the bench for Tottenham this season under Ange Postecoglou having been a regular started at the club for the past three seasons. Doherty, who joined Atletico Madrid from Spurs last summer but only played twice, is back at Wolves after three seasons away.

"Clearly he shoves him, enough for him to be off balance there. That's why he misses the target as he does. For me, that should have been a penalty."
